01 - Comfort
Celena was a source of strength for him when days became tiresome and stressful as drought began to take hold of the land, just as Van was a source of comfort for her when the nights were too long with nightmares of old scars that never had gone away.
02 - Kiss
Of the two of them, she was the one that had ever kissed someone, regardless of the circumstances of that experience, but he made sure she realized very quickly that despite his inexperience, he most certainly didn't need her to teach him how to set all her nerves ablaze with his lips.
03 - Soft
His hands were hard with calluses from handling a sword for years, from hard work that he always helped the workers at the castle with, but they always felt soft and gentle to her as they brushed across her skin, fingers tracing the shape of her lips before he'd capture them with his own.
04 - Pain
Celena had wrenched her knee when she fell off a ladder when she'd been helping the workers harvest the fruit crop that year, and though she tried to insist she was fine, she could continue to help, it didn't escape Van's notice the painful limp in her step, and he ordered her off her feet for awhile, despite all her protests.
05 - Potatoes
Back in Palas, Celena's diet, as was typical for the area, consisted mostly of seafood and starches, such as potatoes, pasta and rice; it was amazing to her how much fresh vegetables and wild game became part of her everyday meals once she moved to Fanelia with her husband.
06 - Rain
It was raining outside the first time they made love, late in the night after the wedding festivities had finally quieted enough for them to escape, and the sounds of the rain against the stone walls and roof of the castle covered the quiet cries and whimpers as skin was touched, tasted, explored.
07 - Chocolate
She was such a strange girl, Van decided as he watched the younger Schezar sibling decline the dessert prepared for the celebration feast for Millerna's child- he thought all women liked chocolate.
08 - Happiness
He'd asked her one night, while she was sick from the oppressive heat that had hung over Fanelia all summer, if she was happy there, despite the difficulties; she'd smiled sleepily at him and told him she couldn't be happy anywhere else.
09 - Telephone
Van still spoke with the girl from the Mystic Moon, through some means that Celena was never fully able to determine, spanning the distance between them with just thoughts alone; she never interrupted his private conversations with the woman who'd had the first claim on her mate's heart.
10 - Ears
Her ears were the first part of her to turn red with embarassment, the color quickly spreading across her cheeks and down her neck, and Van took great delight in teasing her until she blushed, watching with interest as the flush colored her face and neck and across her chest.
11 - Name
She'd always addressed him by his title, regardless of the tone she'd used to say it; the first time she whispered his name against his lips, he felt as if his world had turned itself upside down.
12 - Sensual
Van had heard crude remarks about women with full, sensuous lips before, and personally, he thought the men that made them were full of shit; Celena certainly never had any problem driving him past the point of coherent thought with her mouth and lips and tongue.
13 - Death
She'd locked herself behind walls so tight she hadn't been truly living until he'd stepped into her life, however unwilling they both had been about the fact at first; in a way, they'd both brought each other back to life from the ashes of the war that had taken so much from them.
14 - Sex
He'd turned lovemaking into an art, one where she was the center of his focus, and for her, he was the only thing left in her world.
15 - Touch
Van figured out early on that Celena was afraid of contact, pushed away from people as quickly as she could manage when it was forced, even if she was in pain and scared witless; he quickly broke her of that fear where he was concerned with gentle patience and a stubborn refusal to let her fears come between them.
16 - Weakness
Celena refused to show weakness to anyone, refused to give anyone any ground against her, too many years held prisoner in her own mind to ever be made helpless again, but Van held a strange sort of power over her that against all her better judgements, she gave up willingly.
17 - Tears
Celena only ever intruded on his time alone at the grave once, stepping into the clearing, unmindful of the cold snow that slipped in over the edge of her boots and kneeled in front of him; he held her tightly as she gently kissed the wet streaks on his cheeks, neither of them saying a word.
18 - Speed
It was dizzying sometimes, trying to keep up with her, how quickly she talked circles around people, at once prying information out of others, giving none, and out-reasoning even some of the more seasoned debaters in the court; it amused Van to watch when she even left her own brother bewildered and wondering what had just happened.
19 - Wind
Sometimes they could still smell the burning of stone and mortar, of wood and oil on the evening wind; they both knew it was just the smell of fireplaces being warmed for the evening meals, but it didn't stop the moment of fear that flashed back through their minds at the shared memories.
20 - Freedom
Celena had struggled for years to get her life back from Dilandau, and had finally found her chance to do her work for her people with some measure of peace; when Van came to visit the queen and her brother, he'd held her up to judgement for Dilandau's crimes and Celena found herself fighting for her own freedom from that monster all over again.
21 - Life
Life remained exactly the same after Van left from his visit to Austuria- the nobles of Millerna's court remained as frustrating to her as they always had been, and political games remained the same, and required her attention as they had before, and she would leave for home with her brother after the work was done just as always, but it seemed somehow duller, more a tedious duty than the work she loved and wanted to do without the banter and arguing with him that had become part of routine while he was there.
22 - Jealousy
Even after Celena's protests and cold words had managed to cut through his comfortable walls of denial and convince him that she was as much Dilandau's victim as he had been, Van still held onto his bitter resentment towards her a little while longer- though he'd never ever admit it to her, even years later after they'd married, part of him was jealous of her for having those years with his brother that he hadn't.
23 - Hands
Her hands were gentle on his skin, shyly exploring as she watched him intently, watched his expressions and the way his breath hitched and his muscles trembled as her fingers traced feather-light patterns across his hips.
24 - Taste
She never seemed to mind the slightly-bitter taste of him when she got down on her knees in front of him, watching him as her tongue flicked across the head of his cock, eyes only drifting close briefly when his fingers would tangle in her hair tightly, silently commanding her to stop teasing him; she would take him into her mouth then, and the world was reduced to the feel of her mouth, her lips and tongue and teeth on needy flesh.
25 - Devotion
Van was sometimes startled by the intensity of her devotion to him once she'd pledged it to him, and wondered how he'd managed to earn such a thing from a woman like her.
26 - Forever
He would always remember Hitomi, but it was Celena that was his always.
27 - Blood
One of his first clues that his prejudices against the younger Schezar sibling were unfounded was when he noticed the way the color drained from her face and her hands trembled slightly at the sight of blood.
28 - Sickness
Celena fell ill frequently, moreso after she moved to Fanelia, to a climate her body was unfamiliar and unused to- her immune system was poor, a side effect of the Fate Alteration that would likely linger with her the rest of her life- and more than once Van considered finding a way to get her back to Asturia, but she never let him humor the idea for very long, insisting that her place was with him, regardless of anything else.
29 - Melody
Van had nearly yelled at her, temper flaring reactively when he'd realized she was the source of the humming- the last time he'd heard that melody, it'd been when he found out his brother was alive, and a traitor.
30 - Star
The view of the night sky was beautiful from up there, in the entrance of a cave that was little more than an alcove that Van and his brother had discovered years ago, that had once been a child's secret hiding place, that still served its purpose, though the child was now a man with his wife naked and curled up on the blanket against him; when a shooting star passed overhead, she leaned over and whispered "make a wish" into his ear, and he'd captured her lips in a fierce kiss before answering that he didn't need to anymore.
31 - Home
Celena spent ten years terribly homesick for the family she'd been taken from in Asturia, but in the end, it turned out to be Fanelia of all places that was home to her.
32 - Confusion
She gave him a look of hazy-eyed confusion when he told her to stop, letting him pull her head back to look up at him, but she voiced no protest when he leaned down and kissed her hungrily, pulling her up to straddle his lap, her slick heat teasing against his aching erection.
33 - Fear
She never let her fear show on her face, her expression unreadable, even her eyes were blank and without any sign of what lurked beneath the surface, but every now and then, Van caught her hands trembling when certain subjects came up.
34 - Lightning/Thunder
Celena listened to the storm outside the window, the chill warded off by the fireplace in the room, by the thick covers, and by Van next to her, warm flesh pressed against hers, and nowhere in the world felt safer.
35 - Bonds
She didn't even test to see how strong the bindings around her wrists were, watching him with unwavering trust as he lingered over her, taking in the sight of her naked and tied to the bed before he ducked his head to leave a trail of kisses across her heated flesh.
36 - Market
Celena made him go with her to the marketplace in Palas whenever they visited, and he would smile and quietly stand back and watch as she interacted with the people from her old home, talking with merchants and customers alike as if they were old friends and occasionally buying small trinkets for whomever it struck her fancy to do so for.
37 - Technology
There was next to nothing Celena missed about the life she was held prisoner to in Zaibach, but one thing she sometimes wished she had at her disposal in Asturia was the communications technology; a month felt too long to wait for a reply from her friend in Fanelia.
38 - Gift
To Celena, the most precious gift she'd received was represented in the simple gold band she wore under her glove on her fourth finger of her left hand.
39 - Smile
Van had hated her smile, had thought it was condescending to him, before he realized that it wasn't just something she gave to him, but to everyone, and it was too guarded to be condescending, or smug, or anything but wholly fake, with all the warmth of a statue's chiselled expression; the first time he'd seen a real smile on her face, it'd been small, barely tugging on the corners of her lips, but it'd lit up her whole face and he was smiling in response before he could even help himself, amazed that he had gotten that look from her.
40 - Innocence
Innocence was something neither had known in a very long time, but there was still something naivè and shy in their actions the first time he pulled her into his arms and kissed her.
41 - Completion
Some part of Celena found it bitterly ironic that she was there as queen to oversee the completion of the rebuilding of Fanelia when it'd been her mouth- though another's words- that had given the orders to the Dragonslayers to burn the land to the ground.
42 - Clouds
Celena wouldn't even admit it to herself, but sometimes she preferred it when clouds obscured the Mystic Moon from sight, because there was nothing to make Van get lost in long-ago memories then.
43 - Sky
Whenever he looked to the sky, up at the Mystic Moon hanging high above, he remembered Hitomi's voice, the smell of her hair and the way she smiled; Celena would slip her arms around him then, resting her head against his back, the gravity of her bringing him back home to the earth below.
44 - Heaven
Even through arguments and fights, there was nowhere Celena would rather be than at Van's side- it was where she belonged, and where she would stay as long as she lived- but of everything she shared with him, the stolen moments away from festivities, from meetings and the stresses of ruling a country, when they ducked into the shadows down the hall, or just to the far side of the room, just out of sight of prying eyes, and he held her tightly, those were the moments that were heaven to her.
45 - Hell
Most people thought that Hell was fire, and sulfur, but Van knew it was cold ice- Celena had seen it, had been held prisoner in it, and it was easy for him to see that she'd returned from it chilled, hard and coldly calculating and jealously protective of her own survival and freedom.
46 - Sun
Celena hated staying out in the sun for any length of time, her pale skin easily burned a bright, embarrassing red that stayed pink for almost a week, but despite (or perhaps because of) her annoyance, Van couldn't help but finding it amusingly cute.
47 - Moon
She shared a name with the goddess of the moon, and watching her as she sat quietly at the edge of the midsummer's festivities, watching the celebrations of her new subjects, that faint glimmer of a smile on her face and the firelight and the moonlight playing in her pale hair and touching her skin with a warm caress, Van had to say she was far more beautiful than any fabled goddess.
48 - Waves
One thing Celena found that she missed after she'd moved to Fanelia with her husband was the sounds of the ocean; she'd grown used to falling asleep listening to the waves, and had to teach herself to get used to the sounds of the forests around the castle, and of the gentle rise and fall of Van's breathing as he slept next to her.
49 - Hair
Most of the time that he saw her there in Asturia, she had her hair pulled up into practical bun, only her bangs left to frame her face, and unless she turned her head, it gave the eerie impression that her hair was still as short as Dilandau's; after the fire in the stables, with her hair hanging messily around her shoulders, face streaked with soot and tears, he realized she really didn't look anything like the man that had burned his homeland to the ground.
50 - Supernova
It was a flash of white heat that washed over her, drowning out all thought, taking away her ability to breathe as his fingers worked against slick flesh, and she arched her back, aching for more contact, for more of that delicious feeling that exploded along her veins like a flashfire, left her nerves frayed and shattered as her climax took hold of her.
