Sleight of Hand ((FINISHED THREAD))
Who: L and Mello
Where: Emptiness
When: August 14, Shortly After the L/Light encounter.
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Mentions of horrors past, and a bit of mind-manipulation and controlled violence
Summary: "The Rest of the Story" could have been a second title for this thread. It's finished before it's even begun, considering that the only characters involved both belong to this player. I felt that it was somewhat important to thread, though, in order to avoid future confusion. The following is what happened with Mello and L after Mello stumbled upon the scene in the L/Light thread. Mello tells a story to the highly suggestible L, revising his reality to prevent him from doing anything rash after he realizes what actually almost happened with Light. He also gets some useful information about L's cameras, which he'll later share with Kain.
Grumbling, Mello hauled the bizarrely compliant detective out of the gun shop, going around the back and dropping him by a long-empty dumpster. He’d stuffed Light into an empty gun case... but he couldn’t be too careful, or dismiss the possibility that the man would break out. He remembered when he’d been just like this... unable to obey his own will, and completely at the mercy of whoever was delivering orders... it had sucked ass. Fortunately, he hadn’t been manipulated to the extent L had.
Mello respected L, and didn’t want to give him direct orders he’d have no choice but to obey... but they were short on time. “Here... put on your clothes,” he said, tossing L his bloodstained shirt and dusty jeans. “OK...” he said, as L dressed himself. He had to think this through; one chance to save a man he’d grown up admiring, and he wasn’t going to fuck it up. “I’m going to ask you some questions, and you’re going to answer them, honestly, to the best of your ability. Do you understand?” L nodded, eyes glassy and staring. “Good. First question. You and Blythe broke up. How do you feel about that, L?”
“Devastated,” L answered, after a moment. “Devastated, and then numb...”
“Makes sense,” Mello said, standing and pacing in front of the now fully-clothed L. “So, boy meets girl, girl dumps boy, boy... is ‘devastated.’ I’m following you. So, why were you out in Emptiness? Were you planning to meet Light?”
“No,” L answered immediately. “That was never a plan. I wanted a productive distraction and I decided to install cameras in Emptiness.”
“Really...” Mello raised his eyebrows. “Cameras... could someone, say... me, Mello, access footage from the cameras?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me how.” L then told Mello everything about the site he’d set up, and the passwords needed to access the cameras’ view of Emptiness. “Great. Great, thank you. That’s what I needed. How are you doing? How much control do you have over your own thoughts, at this point?”
“About 5% of my mental faculties are at my disposal,” L responded, eyes still glassy.
“Increasing?”
“Yes.”
“I need you to keep answering my questions. Light caught you here, in Emptiness. Correct?”
“Yes.”
“OK. He shot you... I got that. Then he started... doing stuff... with you. Right?”
“Yes.”
“And... you enjoyed it?”
“Yes.”
“What was the reason?” Mello asked, gagging slightly.
“He told me to.” Mello breathed a sigh of relief.
“All right. L, think hard about these next ones. Do you hate Light Yagami?”
“Yes.”
“Are you mad at Blythe?”
“It’s hard to say... a little...” L held his head, wincing; that seemed to be the effect of an attempt to give information one didn’t have.
“Do you still love Blythe?”
“Yes.”
“What will you do, when you come out of this and realize what you did with Light, and that you were unfaithful to Blythe?”
“I will kill myself,” L replied, with chilling frankness, “and ensure that my body is never found.”
Mello gulped. “OK. Here’s what you have to do. This is an order. FORGET what happened to you. FORGET what Light did to you. Put it out of your mind. Do you understand?”
“Yes.”
“What did Light do to you?”
L tilted his head, holding it as if it ached. “When...?”
“Good. All right. Next command...” Mello reached into his boot, producing a knife. “I want you to slit your wrists. Do a good job of it... but don’t cause nerve damage.” L complied calmly, slicing into the undersides of his wrists as if he were cutting bread. Mello ordered him to stop, worried that he’d go too far if he was allowed. He hastily stowed away the knife, grabbing L’s bleeding arms and bandaging them tightly with the long cloths he’d found in the shop that were used to clean rifles. “L... how much control do you have over your own thoughts?”
“Twenty percent.”
“Then listen, because this is important. I want you to believe this like it’s fact... no, like it’s religious truth. THIS is what happened today: you were heartbroken over the fact that Blythe left you, that she tossed you aside like something disgusting and horrible that she never wanted to see again. You installed cameras in Emptiness, but you never saw Light. When you came to the gun shop, you started to think about death, and you decided to slit your wrists and end your suffering once and for all. I found you and stopped you from ending your life. Do you understand?”
“Yes, I understand. I tried to kill myself, by slitting my wrists, and you... saved me.”
“Righto. Now imagine how Blythe would feel, if she knew that you were out here... and what you’ve done to yourself...”
“She... would be very angry... she would hit me and call me an idiot and never speak to me again.”
“Undoubtedly! So you can’t leave Asgard. You CAN’T leave Asgard after the Trial starts, and if you do you have to be with people, because you can’t be trusted alone. Say that back to me: ‘I’m a hazard to myself, and can’t be trusted alone.’”
“I’m a hazard to myself... and can’t be trusted alone...”
“How are you now? Your mental control?”
“Sixty percent... I slit my wrists... Mello?”
“You did. With this knife,” Mello said, planting it in the grass near L’s feet. “You sure are lucky I found you... otherwise, you might have bled to death by now.”
“Please... you can’t tell Blythe about this... or anyone else, it would be terrible if she found out... and Frank, too...”
“Yes, it would. It would...” Mello agreed, pulling L to his feet. “Come on... we have to get you back to Asgard and get someone competent to take care of this mess...”
OOC: After this, presumably, Mello finds a way to get L to Alice, who helps him. He begs her to keep quiet about what he believes happened, since he is confused and ashamed, and he'll be avoiding seeing people until the tell-tale bandages come off his wrists.
