Wesley just sighed. "So you actually are an idiot. Harmony was right, I cringe to say. Angel, Spike has this... fixation, on you. He always has, if you recall. He can't decide if he wants to kill you or be like you, and whenever you get close to anyone he's going to attempt to sabotage that because he doesn't want you to have anything that he doesn't have. When he became stuck in the building with us, first as a ghost and then as himself I did a bit of research on him. He's got severe abandonment issues, issues that reach into the present day, in fact. I'm not saying that they're justified by any means, but he was not the most stable of individuals before he was turned, and the regaining of his soul has probably added to the minor instabilities that were hidden by his soulless nature." He got up to refill his coffee, and then settled back onto the couch. "If I had to guess--which, since you are not being forthcoming with the details, I must--this young lady was defending your honor from some of Spike's usual blandishments?" He sighed. "You know what is best for you, Angel, but did you ever once think that Spike is playing you? Playing into your fears, I mean, seeing as how he knows what a leash you keep yourself on? Using your situation to further his own agenda to keep you isolated from everyone, and therefore, open to his manipulations and guilt trips?"
