Finn shook his head. "I know, but I shouldn't have said anything," he said after a moment of thought. "I just thought that you were from my time and that she liked me...and it doesn't matter, I guess." He shrugged. Finn wasn't stupid, okay? He knew that Beth knew he wasn't her dad and that she shouldn't like him so why had he expected anything different from the little girl? That wasn't fair to her, especially when he knew better. When Beth started to cry and Quinn told Finn that it wasn't because of him, he was somewhat dubious but he wanted to try to cheer little Beth up. He didn't want Beth to be scared or stressed or whatever (he hadn't even known toddlers could feel those things!) and he didn't want her to cry, because it broke his heart. "I, uh, I have somethin' for her," he offered. "Can I give it to her? It's not much...just a stuffed animal and some books. My mom thought they'd be appropriate for her." He reached into the pocket of his jacket and pulled out a tissue, handing it to Quinn. "I'm-uh-I'm sorry you're sad, Beth," he said. "And stressed cos you're too little to be stressed." He pulled a silly face at the little girl, hoping it would make her smile. |
