In another circumstance, the scene in front of him might have been a good time. It was some sort of club filled with the locals of the islands celebrating the holiday he was mostly unaware of. Their costumes ranged from elaborate and almost realistic to barely trying but, combined with the thumping of the music in his chest and the flashing lights, the totality of it was overwhelming.

Ed hadn't had any intention of going to the city, he'd only meant to go outside and check the sky, to keep track for the charts he and Stede had been working on, but he'd forgotten about the doors being messed up and instead of being out on the deck, surrounded by nothing but the night sky and the too-calm seas, he'd ended up here. The extremity of the change in his surroundings hit Ed like a brick wall. His breath went short and his hands started to shake, it felt like his vision was trying to fade out and his head was spinning.

He found himself stumbling back, trying to find the door he'd come from and hoping it would get him back to the ship, but it was then someone came up onto him, wrapping their arm around his shoulders and saying something about how good he looked. Through the fog, he could barely make out the figure next to him. They looked like some kind of sailor or pirate but...dead? Their face was pale and sunken, there were barnacles and seaweed on their skin, their clothes were dirty and torn, there was blood on them. If he was in his right mind, he would have seen how fake it all looked, how drunk the man was, but Ed couldn't see any of that right now.

Instead, his hand went to the dagger at his side and he was halfway to drawing it when he finally fell back through the door, the other man falling away in the process. He was almost relieved but turned to find he was somewhere else again, with another person in front of him. Still blinded by the overwhelm and anxiety his hand flew before he thought about it and the dagger landed squarely in flesh with a harsh thud.

Loki had been stuck in his own little world. His concentration was solely focused on himself. He was playing with the energies inside of him. The infinity stones had left a mark. Some of their energies still lingering. They were weak. A lot weaker than the stones themselves. But even a small whale was still a whale... even a lion cub could still be the king of cats. He used the energies... practised with them. The different colours of the stones swirled around him as he tried use their power. The task he had set himself seemed trivial compared to the energy he was expanding. He tried to move the apple tree outside of his home forward in time. Bring it to a point where it harboured fruit. So far, it was a hit and miss operation. It had grown a few extra leaves. Nothing more. Yet, it had attacked him viciously. To draw on these energies, he had to give up his life. An easy thing to do for a man who switched between the world of the living and the dead through sheer will. But it do did not stop there. Parts of skin had started to rot. It always cost him a little bit of concentration to stay in shape... to pass as a living man at a moment where his heart wasn't beating. That concentration was missing now and the wounds inflicted by death and the violent streaks of the stones' energies were not healed and instead had tuned him into a grotesque figure.

While not much could have gained the sorcerer's attention at that moment, a knife into his flesh did the trick. From one moment to the other, Loki’s conscious returned to the here and now. The swirls of magic stopped and the man opened his eyes. He glanced down at the point where the knife was sticking out of his flesh, then up at the man who had caused the wound. It hurt. But it wasn't the overwhelming pain a living body might have felt.

"Whatever gave you the idea that that was a wise thing to do..." His tone was blank as he took in the appearance of the feral man in front of him.

Ed did look quite feral as he pulled the dagger back with him, holding it in front of himself protectively. His hair had only been half tied back and was now, along with his beard, rather disheveled. He wore some of the black jeans he'd stolen from a shop in one of the cities but no shoes, one of Stede's shirts hung loose around him under his unclasped leather jacket but all of it was a little messy and didn't have the careless style he usually carried.

Seeing Loki though, half-rotted and clearly something other than human kept him on edge. "Demon..." he gasped, lunging forward with the knife again. It didn't make much sense, if the other man was truly a demon Ed's dagger was hardly going to help, but it felt like all he could do.

Loki hadn't stopped him. Maybe it was because of the exhaustion the stones made him feel. Maybe it was due the pain they inflicted. The new wound could not compare. That didn't mean the Norse God wasn't annoyed by the bearded man's antics.

"Really now..." he said. With that a blast of green errupted from his hand and was flung towards the other man. "Has no one taught you when to stop?"

Ed was expecting a blow from the man's fist, not for the energy that blasted out and away from him, so he hadn't been prepared for it and was easily thrown, landing on his back a few feet away. His dagger was left behind, stuck in what should have been an almost certainly fatal blow in Loki's chest if he'd been only a man, but he wasn't, and the knife had been Ed's only weapon. He would have bragged about his precision in getting it lodged between the other man's ribs without sticking in the bone, if he weren't so worried.

He ignored Loki's question, mostly because the answer was probably obvious by now, but also because he didn't want to give him any more information than necessary, he didn't know what this demon might be capable of if he knew too much.

"What is it you want?" Ed asked in desperation, maybe striking a deal could get him out of this with his life. He didn't have much to offer at hand but he was getting better at finding things around the islands and he and Stede had built up a small stockpile in this house and ship. "What would it take to let me be free of you?"

Loki had opened his mouth. It was a brief motion because the surprise that the rugged man's words brought him, let him stop shortly. "Not be stabbed would be a start!" He halted and when started to initiate his body's healing. As always, when he had used the energies connected with the stone, it took a while longer. But muscles were slowly rebuild and eventually skin grew on top. "You came into my home." He held his arms open to notion to his surroundings. The room itself was relatively empty. Wooden floor. White walls. A desk at the end. Books were spread out in it. But that was it. It was the room he went to when he was practising. Somewhere he couldn't do much damage. "And then had the indecency to stab me. This is by far the lousiest assassination attempt I have witnessed so far. I am dead. How is this supposed to do anything?" With that, he pulled the knife out of his chest, just before the wound underneath was starting to close.

It was only once Loki gestured to the room around him that Ed took his eyes off of the nearly-grotesque show of the man's healing to notice anything besides him. The room was a bit plain for his tastes, but he supposed it was just a room. There wasn't the thumping music in his chest, or the flashing lights that had started all of this. The pounding had just been his own heartbeat, the noise in his own ears, and now that he could take a moment to breathe it all started to slowly subside.

The way Loki's flesh grew and healed, in front of him still had Ed on edge, but he'd seen genuine magic in this place already. Knew there were beings who could do things that were only superstition and stories where he came from. He still couldn't be sure this man wasn't a demon or something with similar motive, but the absence of everything else that had overwhelmed his senses made it easier to just hold a wary distance, rather than offensive position.

"Wait, how are you dead?" he asked, unthinking. The curiosity spilling out before he could consider much else that had been said.

"Someone broke my neck," he said. A little less irritated now that the stabbing had finally stopped. "Giant egomaniac, went on to kill half the universe. Cannot recommend meeting him." The tone drifted off into a casualness. That was the thing with Loki... the things that made him shudder at night were turned into a joke during the daylight. His worst nightmares given fresh paint and handed out to to a passerby as an entertaining story. A cheap laugh. Nothing more.
