It was quiet, wasn't it? Even in early mornings like this, a ship was never usually this silent. The sea and the birds would be making their background noise, there would be the chatter of men waking up, seeking their breakfast, and starting their routines. There was never true silence on most pirate ships. But here? With just the two of them on ever-calm waters, it did get close more often than not.
"I could dress like the Spanish and stab you a few times?" It was a tease but it also betrayed his anxiety. Stede couldn't really leave again (at least not of his own volition) but could he grow to resent Ed the way he had once resented his wife? Would Edward alone be enough? Or did Stede need the pirate too?
But, at the same time, he understood it. The ship was almost fully repaired, and they had their little garden mostly ready for the autumn growing season, so every day it seemed that there was less they needed to do. Less time filled with purposeful work. It hadn't started to bother him yet, he was still working on reading, trying to figure out the sort of things he actually liked to do when something like free time existed. But Stede had had his entire life for that sort of thing.
He abandoned his tea on the railing so he could wrap both arms around Stede, nearly clinging to him and pressing a kiss into the soft cloth covering his shoulder. "You're not as bad as you think."
