Lee was finding that hopping from the sofa of one mate to another wasn't exactly restful. He'd had a harried few weeks, but he was aware that he had it loads better than other people right now, so he hadn't complained. Much. Well he had, but mostly to George, who was a twit anyway.
It had made getting the broadcast together more of a challenge. But Lee had managed. He hadn't gotten anyone to come on as a guest this time, so it was a short show, but he figured it was better than leaving everyone in the dark.
At midnight he switched on the charms and equipment, making sure it was all working properly, and then starting. "Hello, listeners, and welcome to another edition of Phoenix Radio. We've got a brief but disturbing show for you today. As always, I'm your host River. And tonight, I'll be the only voice that matters, since none of our regular guests could put in a showing. All off fighting the good fight, ladies and gents. Or possibly getting pissed, and after the last few weeks, they'll have earned it."
Lee flipped to his first note card. "First up, in continuing coverage of ways the Ministry is trying to make everything rubbish, we have the Registration act run amuck. Muggleborns are being brought in, their bloodlines checked, and for some of them, that's the last we're hearing from them. Muggleborn and famous? Then you're probably in luck, since it seems like that's your free ticket to a fictional magical bloodline that exempts you from the Ministry's new accusation of 'stealing magic'. Not famous? Then the outlook isn't good, my listeners. How muggleborns are supposed to have stolen magic to make themselves wizards, your gentle, sensible host has no idea."
"To make it worse, they're not waiting for the muggleborns to waltz in - though plenty still are. We're hearing a slowly-growing number of reports saying family and friends have been grabbed on the streets, supposedly for non-compliance with the Ministry's new policies."
"To cap it off, the Ministry is proving that they're the sort of reliable gents who, when faced with criticism, promptly stick their fingers in their ears and throw a tantrum. That's right, anything but glowing praise for the new policies can land you straight under arrest. It's a bold move on their part, and I for one welcome our new alien overlords. Except for wanting to poke them in the eye with a sharp stick."
"And for a personal note, yours truly can say that the Ministry takes its new, speak-no-evil policy seriously, as I was nearly carted off, and am now one of many, many names on the Undesirable list. First, as always, is Harry Potter, who is off doing something probably dangerous and heroic, but for the moment he's far enough underground that even I have no idea where it is, save that he's out there, he's alive, and You-Know-Who would really rather he wasn't."
"Which brings me to my final note of the night - watch what you say, folks. And I don't just mean publicly. A certain vindictive bastard of a Dark Lord's actual name may be literally Taboo, as in jinxed. We're still gathering proof, but we've got a pretty definite notion that the V-word is jinxed. Hogwarts and other protected buildings are likely immune, but for the rest of us, think of a few choice words and use those instead, just in case."
Lee flipped through his notes a last time, and then put them down. "Short and not at all sweet, but that's it for tonight, listeners. Next broadcast, our password is bat-bogey, and as always listen for the number at the end. Until then, I'm River, and this has been Phoenix Radio." Lee played the pre-recorded bit with the phone number and instructions how to call and leave a message, and then carefully shut everything down and started to pack it in for the night.
