Tucking Zoey in, Verity pressed a kiss to her forehead, promising to kiss Toad goodnight again for her. She backed out, resisting the urge to stand in the doorway for a moment, watching her. Instead, she made sure to leave the door ajar slightly and made her way downstairs to the kitchen, following the sounds of dishes being washed.
“Hey baby,” she greeted Toad, as she entered the kitchen, smiling at the sight of him. He made her so happy, she was so glad that she’d asked him to move in; there was no better bookend to the days than being beside him. She raised up on her toes and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “That’s from Zoey.”
Toad smiled and wrapped an arm around Verity, tugging her against his side as he waved his wand to send the dishes back into their spot in the cupboard. “Just from Zoey,” he asked, turning to face her with a bright smile as he angled for another kiss.
“Yup!” she grinned, raising up to wind her arms around his neck and snog him properly. “This one’s from me,” she answered when she pulled back for breath.
Turning toward her fully, Toad wrapped his other arm around her waist and grinned as he picked her up, holding her against him as he carried her out of the kitchen. “Just the one?” He asked playfully as he pecked her with a kiss.
Letting out a laugh, Verity tightened her arms around him, grinning widely. “Maybe a few more than just one,” she laughed. “I could kiss you all day.”
Stopping in the middle of the sitting room, Toad spun around once and gave her a firm kiss before he let her slide against him and land on her feet. “I wouldn’t say no,” he said, grinning as he thought about the ring in his pocket.
Verity hugged him close, burying her face against his shirt and happily breathing in his scent. She’d never much noticed things like that, until now. Being with Toad had changed things, maybe because she’d never been serious about a bloke before, not like this, where she could quite easily imagine spending the rest of her life with him. “Mmm, I love you baby,” she grinned, tipping her head back to look up at him. “I could kiss you for the rest of my life.”
“I’d like that,” Toad said softly, pressing a kiss to the top of her head as she snuggled against him. “Will you?”
“Will I what?” Ver asked, raising up on her toes to kiss him quickly. “Kiss you for the rest of my life? I already said I would and I will,” she dropped down to her feet and smiled up at him. “Even though it’d make working a bit difficult.”
“I think we could work around it,” he said, smiling into the kiss as he slipped his hand into his pocket and tried to subtly grab the ring. “We’ll have to,” he added, giving her another kiss before he moved to kneel in front of her, wanting to do things right and proper.
Her brows furrowing as he slipped away from her, confusion etched itself upon her face when he dropped down to one knee. She had no idea what he was doing and when he reached up and held up a ring, her mind completely rejected what she was seeing. She froze, her eyes wide, her hands halfway to her mouth, staring down at him, wholly shocked. “T...” she started. “Y...” she tried again, unable to form a whole word. She shook her head, her mouth catching up to things before her brain did. “Yes!”
Thrilled with her reaction, Toad couldn’t help his grin from growing as he held the ring up to her. “I haven’t asked yet,” he said patiently, intent on doing it right even if he already had the answer. “Verity, I love you,” he said, slipping the ring on her finger. “Will you marry me?”
Gasping and laughing all at the same time, Verity nodded desperately, not even realising that she was crying. She couldn’t remember a time when she’d been happier, her cheeks ached she was smiling so widely. “Yes,” she sobbed, dropping down to tackle him to the floor. “Merlin, Toad, yes!”
“Good,” Toad said happily, wrapping his arms around her as he caught her and let her tackle him to the floor. He kissed her repeatedly and chuckled pleasantly. “Good.”
