He loved his work.
Roger was dedicated; always early, consistently late, and he loved his job. His lack of a social life was not as desirable. Unless sleep suffered (which it often did) or he neglected some other area in his life, Roger had trouble keeping up with it. Most friends now felt like distant acquaintances, ones he saw at the occasional party or sent an owl to during birthdays and holidays. Save his colleagues and parents, no one made the weekly cut. Only one person came close: Cho.
Easily described as "the one that got away", the two were now friends more than anything. Given the time spent and words shared, Roger considered her one of his best, maybe even the best. A shared love of Quidditch, coupled with the fact that they'd never tainted their friendship with anything more, kept Cho in his life. During his first year of training, when his entire existence was locked away within the darkened cave of the Unspeakables office, owl to his former teammate and friend were one of the few things that carried his spirit through. The past few months had been ever better, with Cho graduating and the owls turning in to personal visits. Roger desperately needed that friendly face reminding him what he was working so hard for. His discoveries could help protect the people he cared for most, and wasn't that worth the effort?
Today was like any other day. Roger was pouring over research, making notations and trying to form connections where there weren't any - yet. The new journals (the amazing touted owless journals as basically touted by the Weasley twins) were so popular, he'd had his out when Cho scrawled a set of riddles. The brief reminder of her presence was enough to convince Roger out of the office as long as she was willing. On occasion, he could step out for lunch...he'd just compensate by staying far into the dark. With a quick whisper why he was leaving to Contessa (who's desk was closest to his), Roger darted out of the Ministry, flushed himself to the streets, and Apparated with a pop in hopes that Cho wasn't waiting.
Stepping through the heavily used doors of the Leaky Cauldron, the male glanced around only to slow his step seeing he'd arrived first. With a casual wave to Tom and a nod as the few faces he recognized, Roger made his way to a back table for two, taking a seat in hopes that Cho would be there quickly. A familiar face was just what he needed.
