Predictably, the day at work had been deadly boring. A holiday was either completely dead or far too exciting, depending on whether there was an emergency. This Christmas had luckily been the former, and the few of them in the office had spent most of their shifts playing cards or simply messing around. Even Peregrine had given up on paperwork fairly early; it was Christmas, after all. It was bad enough that they had to man the office.
His family Christmas dinner had been around six and while he probably could have dropped by and gotten leftovers, he hadn't particularly wanted to. He'd spent Christmas Eve with them and his sister and they'd exchanged their presents then, but his father had spent far too much time talking about the Ministry, his mother had spent far too much time agreeing with everything he said, and his sister... Well. He and Isabel had never been the best of friends.
And besides, Alastor had asked him to drop by after work. He'd already been hesitant about going back to his parents' after work; he'd pretty much known how Christmas Eve would go in advance. He'd been glad for the excuse to have plans, even if Alastor had simply offered to keep him from being alone on Christmas.
Peregrine was still in his work clothes when he knocked on Alastor's door, holding a small package in his hand. He couldn't go to someone's house on Christmas without bringing a gift, though deciding what to get his boss had been a difficult decision. He'd finally ended up with a tea sampler from some little shop he'd found, asking the clerk for help picking out some instead of grabbing a a prepackaged assortment. It wasn't much, but at least he wasn't empty-handed.
He flashed Alastor a slightly hesitant smile as he opened the door. "Um. Merry Christmas."
