Neville wondered how long it would be before his mum would be hunting him down, to have a little heart to heart conversation with him. Or maybe his mum would send his father instead. Neville hoped that she would think to send Frank to come talk with Neville about the affairs of the heart and how Neville had made a very public proclamation about his feelings for Luna. At least, he'd basically made a public proclamation without actually saying out loud how mad he was for her. And in his eyes, he only felt grateful that Luna wasn't the easily embarrassed sort of girl. The fact that she had agreed to come over made him feel much better about all of it.
Dean had been spot on with the advice, as had Alex Jones: it was something better to be done in person. And Neville thanked the heavens above for letting her come round as he quickly dressed for the weather, changing into thicker pants and putting on a sweater and finding his Gryffindor scarf. The temperature was okay for now, but as soon as the sun dropped, it got far far colder. Not really cold enough to keep the pond frozen like it currently was; that was something Neville could thank his Gran for, as she made a habit of freezing the thing every winter at this time of the year. It was a sort of old family tradition, and Neville wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth. He wanted to skate with Luna and have some time alone with her; he just happened to have a good frozen pond to skate on, so it was all working out.
Now, the hard part was telling her, to her face, how much he fancied her, even with his lack of effort over the past few weeks. He moved down the stairs, looking for his skates as he kept glancing at the floo, waiting for her arrive. He knew he must be over anxious; he found his boots and was lacing them on when he thought he heard a sound in the fireplace and rose, to see a familiar figure emerging from the large opening.
"Hello," he said, stepping forward to lend her a hand to help her step down out of the raised fire place, "Luna, I'm so glad you came," he said, his tone and expression grateful.
