Oh, there's a lot of opportunities If you know when to take them, you know? There's a lot of opportunities If there aren't, you can make them
So Tom had it figured that a bunch of kids would be sticking around at the school for Christmas. If he had his way, really, he would be one of them. He was getting tired of going home to a man who hated him for not actually being his son and a mother who didn't seem to respect herself or her children enough to either keep her legs shut or be honest. However, he knew that Melinda would never do anything but what she was told and he didn't want to spend the holidays without his sister--that just wasn't an option no matter. He'd go where she was, even if he complained about it or acted like he was being put out. Tom loved his sister and that was all there was to it.
But he was thinking about it, and he realised that this having to go home might actually present him with a bit of enterprise. Seeing as the kids who were left behind couldn't even go to Hogsmeade, it meant that they were all probably loaded with money and craving things they couldn't get. Tom figured there was a way to use this to his advantage. He'd offer to get things for people while he was out in the world and bring them back to the castle when the train returned. He'd sell everything with a bit of a mark up and, well, get rich.
He needed a partner in crime for something like this though because he knew if things really got going he'd need a truck besides his own. Lucky for Tom, he knew exactly the person to enlist for his scheme. And so, after rushing out of Transfiguration right before lunch, he went and stood with his arms crossed outside of Daley's classroom, waiting for him to emerge.
