Sariah was getting very good at sneaking.
It had been a game she played as a child to find her way around the house with her eyes closed, trying to find her brother, like some kind of reverse hide and seek. The skill aided her now; she could navigate easily enough in the dark by feeling out with her hands and her feet, and by listening -- you could hear when you were near a wall by hearing the echo of your footsteps, or when you got really close, feeling your breath bounce back at you. For the second night in a row, now, she was walking through the castle mostly blind, with Flora’s hand on her shoulder so she could follow, hooded and masked. She’d Duplicated her mask from Halloween, transfigured the beads into a flat, solid surface, cut off the delicately-shaped top, and charmed the whole thing black. It wasn’t perfect nor particularly comfortable, but it hid their faces ably. They’d even taken off their ties and charmed black patches of fabric over the Slytherin crest so it couldn’t even be said what House they belonged to.
At least tonight it was a little better -- Frobisher had her wand lighted, and while they had to stay well back enough that they wouldn’t be visible if she turned around, it was much easier to follow even a distant light than to feel one’s way along totally blind. It had taken them nearly half an hour to get to the top of those staircases last night and they hadn’t gone all that far from Slytherin. Now, though, Frobisher was headed for the top of another staircase, Sariah was sure, and she was starting to hurry forward, wanting to catch up with Frobisher in time. She drew her wand from under her robes and brushed off Flora’s hand to be able to sneak up quickly. Her shoe scuffed the floor and Frobisher was starting to turn at the sound, but Sariah was quicker.
Impedimenta!
She’d spent most of the day practicing on insects until she could reliably cast it without speaking, though she shouted it in her head as loud as possible. It worked, and Sariah felt a brief flare of triumph, and then a sudden, overwhelming sense of dread. Oh Merlin, what were they doing?
When Sariah sent off the jinx, Flora hopped up in the air and smiled, her hand grasped firmly around her wand.
She turned, Flora’s name on the tip of her tongue, but she managed to stop herself just in time, merely looking at her comrade, the flier still clutched in her own suddenly sweaty hand.
As Sariah stared at her, Flora’s hand went to her wand and she pulled out of her robe, the chrome casing around the bottom of her wand shining in the light that emitted from the Gryffindor’s wand. She sneered and ran down the stairs, waving her wand in front of her as she went, a nasty smile on her face. “CONFUNDUS,” she whispered under her breath, slashing the air with her wand. Flora wanted to take no chances when it came to the mudblood knowing their true identities.
With one large push, Flora shoved Frobisher down the stairs and smiled, her black hair poking out at her shoulders. With a steady hand with her wand, Flora turned to spit down at her from the stairs. Regretfully, Flora said “Petrificus Totalus” and turned back to Sariah, her face heavy with sweat under the mask. “Well, what do we do now?” She didn’t regret attacking her, she wanted to hurt her, but the time would come for and Flora sensed a bit of urgency in her friend, meaning it was time to go.
“I...I...” Sariah was just watching, utterly stunned. What were they doing? She didn’t regret the attack itself, no, of course not. They needed to show that they had more than words at their disposal. Still, why hadn’t they dispatched Vincent and Gregory for this, or even Millicent or Accrington? Without a doubt, the girls would have been intelligent enough to do this correctly and strong enough to do it without personal risk, which would have been more a concern with the boys, but still, there had been options. It was not for ladies to sully themselves with violence and attacks on their classmates, no matter how filthy those classmates were. She ought to be in the common room right now, awaiting a report.
Before she had time to think any more, she was moving. She grabbed Flora by the wrist and bolted, running full-speed down the stairs. She jumped nimbly over her fallen classmate and kept going, giving all the adrenaline to her limbs and allowing her mind to be clear as they were plunged into darkness with the next corridor. She knew what speed they were going and how long this corridor was, carefully calculating when to turn right. Her shoulder clipped the edge of the wall, causing her to hiss, but she’d guessed right and they were headed down another corridor. Soon enough her knowledge would get spotty enough that they needed to slow down, but for now she wanted to cover as much ground as possible.
