Lee was pretty sure that the broadcast signal was getting a little feedback, but he didn't have time to worry about fixing it until next time, as he'd hastily set back up at Sirius' Black's place, gotten the new lists of dead and injured, and lined up two volunteers to talk on short notice.
He was running on no sleep, and felt like he was probably going to sound like a twat, but the people hurt and dead deserved to have their names heard.
He ran Poppy and Edgar quickly through how the broadcast worked, since the microphones were touchy if you moved them too much, and then sat down, getting started.
"Welcome, listeners, to a brief follow up to our last broadcast. I know Hogwarts students have had a few words from their Headmaster, and I only hope that this show picks up more listeners outside of the school, since people need to hear what we have to say. Tonight we'll hear from two new guests, and then wrap it up. From now on, we'll be broadcasting regularly on Thursdays, at midnight whenever we can, so tune in and check for us each week."
"Firstly, we have some additions to the list of dead, and some information about the newly appointed Ministry heads. We're sad to inform you that the following witches and wizards are confirmed dead, whatever the Ministry may claim:
Valentine Adams, Unspeakable
Roy Hastings, Department of Magical Sports
Jason Rastrick, Department of Magical Sports
Bernice Borage, Department of Magical Sports
Karen and Helen Moore, Administration
Belvina Lima, Administration
Walden Twonk, Administration
Herbert Fenetre, Administration
Benjamin Coopey, Administration
Rachel Alford, Administration
Diana Quail, Administration
Sybil Shetty, Administration
Jean Bexley, Department of Magical Creatures
Fred Wright, Department of Magical Creatures
Cicero Nobbs, Ludicrous Patents Office
Eddie Keddle, Auror
Rosie Quark, Department of Magical Creatures
Kirsten Davill, Department of Magical Accidents
Polly Porter, Department of Magical Accidents
Victor Osset, Department of Magical Accidents
Archie Lennox, Department of Magical Accidents
Rudy Stewart, Department of Magical Accidents
Margaret Summerby, Department of Magical Accidents
Omar Julian, Department of Magical Accidents
Ida Doyle, Department of Magical Accidents
Larissa Sorbet, Department of Magical Accidents
and Kathleen and Jun Li, who weren't at the Ministry, but whose deaths are believed to be Death Eater related. Two previously injured Ministry members, Viola Cambridge and Xavier Cruz have since succumbed to their injuries as well, despite attempts to Heal them. Some of our injured are reporting torture, coercion, and witnessing Obliviation as well, so the totals we're seeing likely don't paint the whole picture. It was ugly, listeners, and our thoughts are with everyone who lost a loved one."
Lee took a quick swig of the water beside him, voice a little hoarse from talking. "Most of you will have seen the Ministry notice of changes in departments and the Wizengamot. Hogwarts students and recent alumni will recognize Dolores Umbridge's name from her reign of terror at Hogwarts. She's mad, she's anal, and she's in charge now, folks. If you're not a pureblood, she hates you, and she'll do her best to screw you over, and now she'll have a good opportunity. Of the rest of the appointments, we have two confirmed Death Eaters, and a solid notion that several of those remaining are either Death Eaters or Collaborators."
Lee glanced at the clock and then motioned toward Edgar. "And now the first of our two guests. First up is Pumpkin, who is joining us after being present at the Ministry attack. Take it away, Pumpkin." Lee suspected that the handle wouldn't be Edgar's favorite, but he figured it was better than "Manly McStubbleface", which had been his first idea. He switched Edgar's sound on and nodded to him.
"Alright, look. I know people are freaking out about what's going on. That's natural. Lots of things are uncertain right now but you've got to remember to keep your head on, stay calm and go about your business as usual. It's the best thing everyone can do for now until the dust settles--only then can anyone make clear, rational decisions. Doing anything else may end in undesired consequences. I know lots of people know this already, but it doesn't hurt to have general reminders now and again.
What's most important though, is to remember that you aren't alone. No matter what. You are not alone. We're all facing the same difficulties ahead, but just hang in there. If you're concerned, isolated.. whatever. Extend a hand, offer help. Protect each other. Don't isolate yourself. And the kids in Hogwarts, keep your studies up. That's what is important for you right now. Don't let any of this deter you from continuing your education. I know it feels helpless.. but those of us on the outside have got it covered, and the last thing anyone needs is a bunch of teenagers running off to play hero."
Edgar finished, and Lee gave him a quick smile before switching the charms again. "Thank you, Pumpkin. We're putting together a more in-depth look at what happened at the Ministry, listeners, but your friendly host and his helpers need some time to get the facts all in order, so listen for that next time. And now I'll hand you off to Dorothy, who has some help for you muggleborns out there." Lee counted off for Poppy with his fingers, and then gave her a nod as he switched her on.
Poppy took a deep breath, gave Lee a weak smile, and began. “St. Mungo’s may not welcome all of us anymore, but there are people out there concerned for your health. First, let’s discuss the times a healer is necessary.” She took a moment to run through a description of basic spell damage and common maladies that the wizarding public would be likely to see. “Now, if you are a muggleborn or otherwise unwelcome at the hospital, there is a way to reach a healer or someone else willing to help you.” She listed a telephone number. “Using a muggle telephone, call this number and leave a message with your location, and a trained volunteer will contact you.” With a small smile, she added, “If you are not certain how to use a telephone, I suggest asking a muggleborn. They will likely be happy to help you.” She hesitated, glancing at Lee. “Thank you for listening.”
Lee gave her a reassuring smile. "All right, so if you're in trouble, who you gonna call, people?" Lee read off the number again, just in case. "Jot that down, keep it handy. If you have information to pass along, you can use that number as well. That's all for Phoenix Radio tonight. Next show, our password is Ghostbusters, and I'm River. Thank you to Pumpkin and Dorothy for their time. Stay safe out there, ladies and gents. And to the Undesirables - you're brilliant in our book, and we're here to help."
