For over a year now, Malfoy Manor had felt like anything but a home. It had been cold and empty during Draco's sixth year with Lucius in prison and Narcissa left as the only resident, forced to pass the time fretting about her son in Hogwarts, her husband in prison, and what the Dark Lord might want next from her family.
Now, Lucius returned, Narcissa only wished that she could claim things were better--but she couldn't. Because now her precious home was crawling with undesirables. Death Eaters, vile and wretched murders, cannibalistic werewolves, and disgusting dirty thieves. She'd had the elves lock everything away in the family vaults that was worth anything, which left the normally richly decorated halls looking baron and more like a prison than a home.
The preparations for Draco's party had been a welcome distraction, helping Narcissa deal with the fact that, whenever she looked at what her home had becoming, she found herself practically swallowing back bile. It will all be over soon, she would tell herself, but it was hardly a comfort. She didn't know what the end might bring for her, or her men.
Narcissa stood before the portrait of her mother-in-law, Lucius' mother. She was a strong featured woman and Narcissa had been convinced, when the woman was alive, that she'd hated her. In death, her portrait at least, seemed found of her son's wife and they would talk on occasion. They'd just finished a conversation about the tableclothes for Draco's party when the Elderly Mrs. Malfoy had gone off to ask her cousin (in another portrait) what she thought, leaving Narcissa alone again.
She turned to walk back to the library and practically leapt from her skin when she realised that Antonin Dolohov was standing behind her, silently. He did this often and normally Narcissa would just make a noise of disgust and hurry away flushed and annoyed but today was different. Today, he'd intruded. He's broken her protected little illusion of normalcy, he'd listened to her conversation with her mother-in-law, and he'd reminded her that her life right now wasn't normal, and in that very moment he represented everything that she hated about what was happening in her life.
