It was the third one he'd been working on as he made a concerted effort to catch up on the homework that he'd seemed to have gotten behind on. Again, he was behind. And again, he knew he would get behind. It was the nature of the year, he decided, to be in a constant state of catching up. And it didn't help that other things were plaguing his mind. Harry and Ron had been sneaking out, on a regular basis, and he was pretty certain that Hermione was going with him. It made him worry: worry about them, and worry for the House losing yet again, more points. Even in his own mind, he knew that his concern was far more for them, especially after what had happened with Hannah's sister, her being the first of a growing list that seemed to be being snatched and then brutally murdered. His worry for them was mounting, to a point that he was the precipitous of confronting them about it. He had to wonder if Ginny knew more than him of what was going on, right under all of their noses.
Neville was not one prone to fretting, but hard evidence gave him cause to worry. And his parents were out there, first in the line of fire. He wanted to get his work caught up, and then owl them, and urge them to take it easy and try to stay out of trouble; an odd owl he was sure would make his mother scold him over. But he wanted that scolding from her; he wanted to sure she took his words to heart. He also knew he should not tell anyone about what his friends were doing, but it did make him fret a bit for them as well. It made him more anti-social. He didn't mean to be; he just found himself drifting off into his own thoughts when he was with the rest of his house, clearly distracted but trying to stay part of the group.
Luna was going to meet him. Even thinking about her brought a relieved smile to his face.
If she can keep a hold of her shoes, he thought to himself, the notion of her coming into the library in her stocking feet making him smile as he checked for continuity in the sentences he just wrote.
