The list of references wasn't very long and it included Daphne Greengrass's name because none of the other people he worked for or knew at the moment were wizards. He couldn't put his last manager's name on the list, either, because he'd bunched him in a bar fight a few days back, so he doubted the man would really be able to put in a good word for him.
Miles was fit, he knew Quidditch like the back of his hand, and he was desperate. There was nothing that made an employee more dedicated or willing to put themselves out there than a healthy dose of desperation. If he had to beg for this job, then he would. Living on the run, hiding from Death Eaters when you didn't have money and you hadn't finished school--it was difficult, it was all difficult, and Miles felt like this might be his last chance to really make a change.
So he cleaned up, wore clothes that weren't stained with his own blood and Flooed his way to the Three Broomsticks. He was tempted to have a drink, even though the place had just opened and it was early, but he thought that might send the wrong impression to his potential employer and so he abstained. Instead, he just had some waffles and clotted cream, and then went across the way to the Quidditch shop.
