It was obvious that Alexander had something else on his mind. He would give her attention, touching her cheek and talking to her in playful tones, but then he would go quiet and seem to drift off somewhere. She frowned for a brief moment before returning to a more neutral expression.
Once he was back, she smiled a little but decided against mentioning his drifting off on her. "I do not doubt that you miss me at all, darling." She was teasing, of course. She did not figure on his missing her always. Her eyes focused on him quietly for a moment. "Of course not," she replied, giving him a small look. It wasn't an unpleasant one. She was merely studying his reactions.
Alexander's words did nothing to convince her of his being pleased about the situation as it was. She forced her expression to a neutral one. She wasn't going to ruin everything by discussing it further unless he intended to hear more of it. It was true that she was looking forward to meeting someone interesting and new to herself, but there was no other understanding there. It was just talking and likely a drink.
Not even the smile he pushed forward was enough to change her mind, but she would play along with his pretend joy for tonight. It was supposed to be a good time, not a bad time. She smiled back at him, thanking him quietly as he pulled out her chair, sitting down gently. Alexander's statement about the restaurant made her glance around quickly. "I trust that it is everything that others have claimed it is. It is very lovely from what I can tell now."
