Who: Julia Wicker and Thor Odinson
What: A first Date
Where: Around the station
When: July… sometime?
Julia was still pretty bummed about the disappearance of Koll and grown up Hope, but she was looking forward to going out tonight. It felt a little bit like they were doing things kind of backwards, with finding out they had a kid together before their first real date, but Julia’s last boyfriend had been in love with a different version of her in a different timeline, so it wasn’t like she was a stranger to weird. It would be nice, anyway, to have a little bit of distraction from the sadness that had been looming over her.
Wearing a green dress, Julia was just putting the finishing touches on her makeup when she heard the knock at the door. She shooed Quentin away from answering it, crossing the apartment to do so herself, and offering Thor a smile when she found him standing on the other side.
—
Thor had been proud to meet his son, a wonderful and happy man that he’d grown to be. There was a part of Thor that had always desired a family, but that never quite felt attainable, not with his lifestyle, not until now. And he had liked Julia since he’d met her, she had a way about her that had been fun when they met at the dance. He wasn’t disappointed his in sons Mother.
Thor had never been great at traditional dates– his first date with Jane had been dragging a drunken Erik back and staying up with her all night to talk about the Bifrost. Their second date had been saving the world.
Thor knew enough though, and he dressed nicely in a button down shirt and jeans. When Julia opened the door and smiled widely, presenting her with a single, yellow sunflower. “Perhaps you will like this?” He said softly.
—
Julia rewarded him with a bright smile for his thoughtfulness. “I love it,” she admitted. She had a particular fondness for sunflowers, but even more than that, she appreciated the non traditionalness of it. Most guys would go with roses. Sunflowers showed a lot more creativity.
She smelled the flower, gazing over it to look him over and she couldn’t help thinking he cleaned up really well. There was no denying Thor was hot in any outfit, but she had to admit he looked especially good dressed like this.
“I’m going to put this in some water and I’ll be right back,” she said, disappearing only for a moment into the apartment, just long enough to conjure a small vase and and fill it with some water. A moment later, she was back at the door, smiling up at him again.
“Are you ready to go?” she asked him.
—
Thor beamed, rather proud of himself, when she seemed pleased with her gift. Of course, Asgard had the best flowers in the nine realms, but Midgard was close.
When Julia came back towards him, he offered her his hand. "I am ready. I've asked Tony for suggestions on where we should go tonight. There is a rooftop bar called the Good Good Culture club, that comes highly recommended."
—
Julia smiled again at that as she took his hand. “I’ve been meaning to try that place,” she admitted. She’d heard about it and it was on her list of places to check out in San Francisco, but being a single mom to an infant didn’t leave a lot of opportunities for a social life and she hadn’t had the chance to go yet.
If Thor was trying to impress her, it was definitely working.
—
"I am glad that we will be enjoying this together then." he smiled.
"I am glad we got to know Koll and Hope." He wasn't entirely sure that this would be happening if it weren't for that glimpse of the future that they had been given. Of course, he had only really met baby Hope the once, but he could already see glimpses of her future self in her eyes.
—
“I am, too, Julia agreed.” She didn’t know if they would be going out right now if they hadn’t met Koll and learned of their future together, but it was possible. They’d talked, they had sort have been getting to know each other and it was somehow less weird than going out with Penny 23 for the first time, knowing he’d been in love with some other version of her. “I wish we’d had more time with them.”
—
“We will,” Thor told her brightly. “We have many years with Hope, and many more with Koll when he comes along. And they were close, and that makes my heart very warm.” He told her. “I have loved my brother with all fiber of my being, but I did not always treat him like I should. It makes me happy to see the way they click together and take care of each other.”
He still hoped every day that Loki would show up, and that he could make up for all the mistakes that he had made in his arrogant years. He wasn’t sure that would ever happen, but he had always hoped. “Did you have any siblings then?”
—
Julia nodded. “My family is complicated. We don’t really see eye to eye on a lot of things. Quentin is my best friend, he’s my brother in every way that counts even if we aren’t related by blood.”
It wasn’t that Julia hated her family, exactly, but she hadn’t forgiven her mother for locking away her father or her sister for going along with everything. “I’m not really close to my mom or my sister,” she admitted aloud, not really wanting to go into the whole sordid history.
“What’s your brother like?” she asked.
—
“Bruce tells me that is called ‘chosen family’. I am his chosen family brother and he is mine, as is Tony and Steve and I have a little chosen niece in Morgan. I love it. I understand though, what you mean.” He told her honestly, “I do not know Quintin, but I should like to meet him if he is important to you.”
“Loki and I … have had our differences.” Thor said, his tone a little darker, “Loki is a smart man, smarter than I by… miles. Probably even by whole universes.” He admitted, “But I was arrogant, and war hungry… we had both wanted to prove ourselves fit to rule Asgard. Loki regarded me as a threat, and I was… blind to his suffering.”
Still, Thor smiled. “He was a mischievous person. He had always enjoyed tricks. And in the end, he was loyal to his people. He was a good man.” He said firmly, “Despite his mistakes.”
—
“Everyone makes mistakes,” Julia offered. “I know I’ve made some pretty big ones.” That was an understatement, but she was trying to be vague here. “I like to think we have the chance to redeem ourselves and make up for the bad by doing as much good as we can.” She couldn’t take back what she’d done in the past, but she’d tried to make amends where she could, to do something good with the power she had. She might not be a goddess anymore, but she still wanted to make a positive difference in the world.
“Loki sounds interesting,” she added. “I hope I have a chance to meet him one day. “
—
“I hope so too,” Thor said gently, “I think that Loki would be intrigued by you. You are smart, beautiful, and an amazingly powerful witch.” He told her. “Our mother was a great witch, and Loki takes after her in his ability to wield magic. I am a… warrior, much like my father. Though that hasn’t always colored me in the best lights.”
—
Julia studied him for a moment. “I think you’re more than that,” she said. His family sounded pretty interesting and she hoped for his sake that she would have the chance to meet them. She could tell he missed them a lot. She could understand that. Being here without Quentin was almost unthinkable, especially after losing him at home.
—
“I am now, maybe,” Thor admitted slowly, “But I wasn’t always. I let my own hunger for glory and adventure almost bring my kingdom down before I had even put my crown on.” He told her with a small frown.
“It is how I wound up on Earth to begin with. Banished, so that I might learn humility.” He shook his head, but he smiled, “Not that I mind being here, not at all.”
—
Julia nodded. “I like to think none of us are who we were in our worst moments. They’re are part of us. Everything we’ve been through and every choice we’ve made shapes us, but it’s who we are now and who we’re trying to be that matters.” She paused, thinking of the long list of mistakes she’d made in her own life and her quest to make it all mean something. “At least I hope that’s the way it works.”
Smiling, she reached for his hand. “For that record, I’m definitely glad you’re here.”
—
Thor smiled, and he curled his hand with hers. “I’m glad that I am here too. I have more things to be glad for than I don’t.” He told her, “You included.”
