“You know, I still don’t trust Angie, but this ride is nice,” Tony said as he nuzzled into Steve’s side as the balloon meandered through the sky. Still, he could have his suit within seconds if something went wrong. “I guess I’m a hypocrite for accepting this gesture.” He smiled up at his boyfriend. Boyfriend. The word made him feel like a giddy teenager in love, but that was how he felt.
"Well, if it makes you feel any better, the event was going to happen regardless of governmental interference. And in this case said interference was just by way of buying us a bunch of tickets." Steve chuckled and moved his hand over Tony's upper arm, his own looped over his boyfriend's shoulders. The sky from this height was spectacular, but it didn't hold a candle to Tony's smile or the delight sparkling in his eyes.
Steve really wanted to kiss him, but he was hyper-aware of the balloon operator. He could behave until they got back to the ground and were alone. "Did you know this is the first time I've been in one of these? You'd think with my history, I'd have some kind of flying phobia, but I really love it up here."
“I’m experiencing a first with Captain Rogers?” Tony joked. Unlike Steve, he didn’t care about prying eyes and shamelessly flirted. However, his expression softened when Steve mentioned phobias. “I’m glad you like it up here.” He shot him a teasing smile. “Otherwise I’d have to fly you back…hmm…that might be another date.”
He flushed and turned his head to brush a kiss against Tony's temple. "Well, I couldn't really give you my other first. You're a few decades late for that." Steve laughed and pulled his boyfriend a little more tightly against him. "I can honestly say that sounds like way more fun than a truly sane person would probably want to have. But I trust you not to ever drop me, so we've got that going for us."
Tony laughed and ran a hand down Steve’s back. “Good, I only drop people I don’t like.” He winked playfully. Flying with Steve in his arms sounded blissful. Actually doing anything with Steve in his arms sounded wonderful. “You know, speaking of firsts…” He cleared his throat. “I do have something to ask you.”
The simple touch, even through his layers, sent pleasure zinging all through Steve's nerve endings. He wasn't sure where Tony's segue was going, but it really didn't matter very much. At this rate, his boyfriend could have asked him for the moon, and Steve would have been on the first shuttle scheduled to go up. "Yeah? What's up?"
Tony’s heart pounded, but he kept his face neutral as his hand found Steve’s. “I was thinking…and I spoke to the kids and they’re on board…” He looked into Steve’s beautiful eyes. “Will you move in with us?”
"Like… roommates?" As soon as it was out of his mouth, Steve knew how stupid it was. He was, however, struck a little brain-dumb.
Despite his nerves, Tony laughed. “I mean, I was hoping for more like a couple sharing a bedroom,” he teased. “Although Rapunzel was ready to clear out the spare room.” It was really her art room, which he’d never take from her. “But if you don’t think we’re there yet…I understand. Really.”
"What? No. Yes, I—" Steve shook his head, face on fire. "Gah! Talk about tongue tied. Does that mean you asked the kids?" Yes, they were technically adults, but still. "James and Rapunzel?"
Tony nodded. He thought Steve was so cute when he was blushing. “They’re on board. You are the last piece of the puzzle.”
Steve's smile was syrup slow and reserved entirely for the man in front of him. "Am I the higgledy-piggledy one with all the weird edges?"
Tony leaned up and brushed his lips gently across Steve’s. “You are the last one that fits perfectly,” he replied. “Is that a yes?”
He fit his hand to the line of Tony's jaw, just barely holding his face up so Steve could kiss him again, a little more firmly. There, he could murmur the one word his heart was singing and make sure his boyfriend could feel it even if the wind carried the sound again, "Yes."
Tony relaxed against Steve, glad to have confirmation that he was on board. “I can’t wait,” he admitted. “You know Bruce and the rest are going to tease us relentlessly.” He didn’t care; he knew it was all in good fun. “I haven’t been this happy in a long time,” he admitted.
"I can take it." Steve shrugged but didn't go far. "And I know it comes from a place of love. Or at least camaraderie. What more can a simple guy from Brooklyn ask for?" He ducked his head, wanted to rub the back of his neck, but that meant letting go of Tony, which he didn't want to do at all. "How soon is too soon to start packing up my stuff for the move? Oh, Lord, I gotta tell Buck. You think Bruce is bad? I ain't never gonna hear the end of it from him."
“We’re ready when you are,” Tony said. As far as he was concerned, Steve could pack up and move that night if he wanted. “I bet James would help you pack.” He stepped back slightly to look at Steve. “I love you,” he said in case that wasn’t obvious.
"I love you, too," Steve said, meaning it with every fiber of his being. His heart thudded with the exciting possibility of this next step and the happiness he never thought was possible for himself. "I'll ask him as soon as we set down. Or maybe tomorrow. What do you say we grab some dinner after this and start planning out the logistics of it all? Or we could not talk at all. I'd be okay with that, if I'm honest."
“Not talk, hmmm?” Tony teased as he pressed closer again. “I mean we probably should plan things, but that is so boring compared to…” He trailed off with a smirky smile.
Asking Steve not to kiss that smile was like telling him not to fling himself off a plane without a parachute when there was work to be done. Which is exactly why Steve pulled him close and kissed him slow and deep. Yeah, he'd tell people about his impending mood tomorrow.
