Log: Tony & James
WHO: Tony Stark (animated) & James Rogers
WHERE: Their apartment
WHEN: Backdated to mid-Sept.
WHAT: After school chats
RATING: Low
There had been bouts of weird, harmless magic— school pictures (which he kinda wished they’d been able to keep, they reminded him of home), the day everyone was late for everything, and then the care bears– but James would take that over the other stuff any day of the week. James was in a pretty good mood though, as he trotted up through the apartment building after school. He did have a particularly hard math class, that broke his brain just the smallest bit, but he was adjusting to being back in the school routine.
He sighed, and dropped his backpack in the living room. “Dad, Punz, anyone?” He called out. There were any number of reasons for the apartment to be empty, but he always sort of liked to announce himself when he came home, if only because so many weird things tended to happen in the building and he didn’t want to startle anyone.
James made his way into the kitchen, grabbing a drink from the fridge before he began digging through the cabinets looking for something to snack on.
The good thing about working at the shop with the other Stark was that Tony could set his own hours and be there to make dinner for the kids. “Don’t fill up,” he teased as he entered the kitchen behind James. “I’m making meatloaf and potatoes.” He grabbed two sodas from the fridge and handed one to his kid. “How was school?”
"You know that I'm never full." He said with a large grin. It was true, most days James could eat more than his fair share. He grabbed a bag of pretzels, and leaned over to give his dad a hug.
"Eh," James said, rolling his shoulders before popping the tab on his soda. "I… um…" he shrugged again, "Algebra 2 might be breaking my brain a little." It didn't help of course, that his notebook was filled with more doodles than math problems. He didn't have the focus for it, honestly.
"How was work?"
“Just eh?” Tony asked, but didn’t push. James would tell him in his own time. “Work was good,” he added. He took a swig of his soda straight from the can and gestured to the chair at the table. “Sit, tell me all about your life. How is Cher?” Tony soaked up time with his kids like a sponge. He and James were close, but James was a teen so sometimes he just liked to check in.
"I'm just counting down the days until school is over." James winked. Of course, then there was the whole daunting question of what he would do with his life when school ended. He wasn't sure he wanted to go to college, he wasn't that sort of person.
"My life is pretty good," James grinned, " You're here. Dads here. Cher is… great." He chuckled, "It's weird, you know. Knowing that she's the one I'm going to end up with. Knowing little bits about the future but not really knowing how we get there."
Tony nodded. “I bet.” He pulled up a chair next to James. “You know, just knowing that, you can still take it day by day. Don’t feel pressured,” he warned.
"Cher said something similar, you know?" He grinned at the memory, "She said that she didn't want knowing the future to stop me from experiencing new things or doing other things, like I wouldn't just bring her with me to experience the whole world."
"It makes me happy, knowing that she's my end goal, the future, and knowing the sort of kids we have. I'm going to start saving up… maybe I can buy her something nice when we graduate. What about you and dad?"
“A piece of jewelry?” Tony asked, before clearing his throat. “There is actually something I want to talk to you and Rapunzel about, but I wanted to clear it with you first.” He suddenly felt nervous, which was ridiculous. “I was thinking about inviting your dad to move in with us. But only if it is okay with you and Rapunzel. I don’t even know if he’d say yes or if I’d ask right away, but I just thought I’d put it out there.”
“I uh… I have been thinking about it, if I’m being honest,” James told his dad honestly. He hadn’t really told anyone his thoughts about it yet— there was a lot to it. Maybe they were too young, but he already sort of knew she was it for him. “It’s not like we would have a wedding the next day or anything.”
His face brightened when Tony mentioned asking Steve to move in. “I love it.” James said honestly. What would be better than having both his dads in one apartment?
Tony raised his brows about the wedding comment. “I should hope not!” He loved Cher, but she and James had their whole lives ahead of them. Besides, James had lived a sheltered existence in the dome; he still had so much life to experience. However, he grinned when James seemed visibly happy about the prospect of Steve moving in with them. “Yeah? I thought it might be nice to be a family under one roof. No idea if he’d agree.” The idea made him nervous if he was being honest.
“I’m not even going to ask her until… the summer maybe… so until then, I’ve just gotta put money away, you know? Cause she likes… really nice things.” James was already a little stressed about finding the perfect ring, but he knew he would know when he saw it. “Anyway, don’t say anything to anyone.”
James couldn’t help but smirk at how nervous Tony was. It amused him how similar the two of them were. “I think Dad will agree. I think Dad likes it here with us.” He beamed. “I could always drop a few hints and see how he takes it if you want?”
Tony frowned. “James, you are very young…” He ran a hand through his gray hair, feeling like it was going grayer by the minute. “Maybe a promise ring? You know…a promise of something more when you are both ready.” And older. Definitely older.
James just sort of shrugged, he didn’t really see the point in waiting if he already knew what was going to happen. “We’ll see what happens. But what about dad?” James asked, “When do you think you’re going to ask him?”
“I need to discuss it with Rapunzel first,” Tony replied. Even if she agreed, he wasn’t sure how to ask Steve. “We’ll just take it one day at a time.” He clamped his hand down on James’ shoulder then. “I’m going to get started on dinner. Why don’t you work on your school stuff?”
James nodded, and moved to pull Tony into a hug. “He’ll say yes.” He assured his dad with a nod, and he moved to grab his backpack to start on his homework. “Let me know if you need help.”
