Sam was more than happy to go when Bucky suggested they get a drink. It was a lot easier than trying to converse on the network, not to mention the fact that Sam could certainly use one. The bar was not far from The Station and it seemed Bucky was a regular since the bartender came over and immediately gave him his order, asked Sam what he wanted and then when he came back, told them it was on the house. When the bartender walked away, Sam looked at his friend and raised an eyebrow. “So you’ve been here before, I take it?” Not that he could blame him, being jerked into a completely different world and told that you couldn’t go home would be enough to make a person want to drink. “So what’s the deal with this place? I got the government speech when I got here but there’s always more to it, we both know that.” Bucky had been pleasantly surprised to see his friend had arrived- since he’d gotten there, it felt like the one thing he’d been missing was Sam. While he could never replace Steve, Sam had somehow become Bucky’s best friend in his last ‘new’ life, and he’d been grateful to him for a number of reasons. But he also knew how Sam could be. He was always flexible, great in a tight situation, but Bucky remembered the initial culture-shock when he arrived. Not being an Avenger. Not being on a wanted list. It was…different. Mundane. In a good way. When they sat down at the bar, Bucky had given the guy a nod and was immediately served a double of whiskey. He waited for Sam to place an order before sitting back and shaking his head, finally smiling at the guy and raising his glass. “So how do you like retirement?” “Wasn’t quite expecting it to happen just yet,” he said with a little laugh and a shake of his head. “But looks like it’s what’s happening. At least San Francisco isn’t so bad. It’s a hell of a lot better than the Madripoor.” Definitely not one of Sam’s favorite spots. “Hopefully the government here has organized crime under control but who am I kidding, it’s the government.” He took a drink and then put his glass on the table. “How are dead people here?” That had been the biggest shock so far. “Stark’s here, Romanoff is here, both of whom I know are dead. Or should I say ‘were’ dead. Steve is here and I thought he was in another world all together. I don’t know anybody else really, I’ve heard of Daisy Johnson, she worked with SHIELD but I’ve never met her. This whole place is just crazy.” Bucky let out a small chuckle at the mention of that old ‘haunt’, not about to argue with Sam there. It felt like a lifetime ago, but he had no fond memories of that city, that was for sure. “Yeah, but at least we’re not cleaning up the mess this time.” He sipped his drink, a memory of that awful club coming back. “Pretty sure we could ask them to put snake venom in your class if you miss it, though.” At the mention of dead people, Bucky did his best not to grimace. He’d actually been pleasantly surprised to see certain ‘dead’ people alive- even Tony. It was nice having a second chance with Steve, and Natasha… Well, that wasn’t something he’d ever been expecting, but it was welcome. A chance he couldn’t have dreamed of having back in their old lives, right? “I don’t know. But I don’t look a gifted horse in the mouth. Even with killer Santas and fucked up turkeys, I’ll take this world over where we came from any day of the week. I don’t have the government breathing down my neck. I have my best friend. And I got a great girl- so, you know?” Bucky shrugged. “Don’t tell anyone, but I even like my job. Scary, right?” Sam nearly spit his drink on the table when Bucky mentioned a girl. Had he met someone here? It was possible but other than his flirtation with Sam’s sister which he was pretty sure was just Bucky wanting to see his reaction, he didn’t know of anyone his friend had dated. “Hold up, I’m glad you like your job, but let’s get back to the part about the girl.”What girl? Do I know her? Funny how out of all the things Bucky said, that was the one that made Sam almost spit out his drink. It took the former Soldier a moment to realize that’s where the shock came from, and when he did he raised an eyebrow almost in challenge as Sam questioned it. “Maybe. But seriously, that’s the part you’re questioning?” “No, I didn’t mean it like that,” he said. “I just, well you never talked about going out with anybody but then it’s not like we weren’t busy trying to clean up shit and save the world.” Which definitely didn’t leave a lot of time for a social life. “Hell, you’d be just as surprised if I told you I had a girlfriend and you know it. I’ve only been here for what….two hours now? Not exactly time to meet anyone.” Sam tried to think who it might be since Bucky wasn’t the most outgoing person but he’d been through a lot so that was no surprise. “My sister’s not hiding around here somewhere, is she? Or Sharon? Although I can’t see you with Sharon. I can’t see anybody with Sharon if you want to know the truth. Not now, not after all she’s been through.” Suddenly it hit him. He could only think of one other person that he knew was here and that Bucky would know. Someone he’d known before and he raised an eyebrow. “You got something goin’ with Romanoff?” It made sense, Sam could easily see them together but he wasn’t about to tell Bucky that. Okay, the guy had a point. Bucky sighed, trying to consider how he’d react if Sam had told him he was with someone. He made a small face at the mention of Sharon. There was someone he felt bad for. A woman who deserved so much more. Bucky sipped. “Yeah…wouldn’t really blame her if she showed up and kicked our asses, though.” He almost choked on his drink then stared at Sam when he got it, grimacing and shaking his head. “Yeah. I do.” There was no reason to hide it. He shrugged. “It’s not weird, right? We started out as roommates and it just kind of happened.” Not that Bucky hadn’t had a little bit of a crush on her before all of this- though ther was never time for that sort of thing. He was in Wakanda. She was on the run with Steve. Part of him figured she was ‘off limits’ for a while. Or she hated him. One of the two. “I know it sounds crazy, but she’s the best thing that’s happened to me since I got here.” “Hell no, it’s not weird. I think it’s great,” his words were sincere. Sam had spent a good bit of time on the run with Natasha and Steve, doing secret missions for SHIELD and he’d gotten to know her fairly well. He had a lot of respect for her and he couldn’t blame Bucky for falling for her. “You both deserve it. And this way I don’t have to worry about you breaking my sister’s heart and me having to kick your ass. If you break Romanoff’s heart, she can kick your ass all by herself.” He grinned and took another drink. Sam hadn’t seen this side of Bucky before and he couldn’t resist teasing him a little. “Oh yeah? What does she think?” he didn’t have to guess, he was pretty sure he knew. “But yeah, that’s great. I mean it.” He chuckled at the comment about breaking hearts, taking a drink and nodding. “Yeah, she will. Not that I intend to do that ever. More like she’ll get sick of me and realize she’s dating beneath her.” Part of Bucky worried that would really be the case. Natasha was definitely not someone he thought he’d have had a chance with in the past- maybe back in the 40s, but not after becoming the old man he was today. It was a matter of time until she figured that out, wasn’t it? “I don’t know. I haven’t really talked to her about that kind of stuff. Truth is, we’ve just been taking it day by day.” And a part of Bucky was afraid to find out the truth. “I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Natasha doesn’t strike me as the kind of woman who changes her mind once she’s made it up. Plus we both know how stubborn she is,” Sam had seen that during their time working together and it was why he respected her so much. She didn’t make a commitment she wasn’t going to keep and she would do whatever she could to take care of those that meant something to her. He took another drink. “Don’t sell yourself short. You’re a good guy, not my type but you’re a good guy,” Sam grinned. “I’m happy for you. I mean that.” “Heh, yeah. Good point.” He paused and glanced at Sam for a second. “C’mon, here I thought you and I were connecting back there.” He was joking, of course. But they had found that bond working together. Breaking the tension with another small grin, he nodded. “Thank you. It’s a good thing. I hope. For now…” “Don’t give me that ‘for now’ shit,” Sam replied. “Just enjoy it and don’t worry about anything. You both deserve some happiness.” He had already gotten the impression that not everyone stayed here permanently but he certainly hoped that whatever took people away didn’t take Natasha and Bucky away from each other. They’d both been to hell and back and they should get their chance to have a normal life. Or as normal as you could get in an alternate dimension. “We should probably get back to The Station,” he said, pushing his glass aside. “I don’t want Natasha thinking I’ve kidnapped you and I guess I should talk to some other people who might be a little surprised to see me.” “Easier said then done. You know how life is for guys like me,” he said. At least he didn’t look completely pessimistic. But there was still that fear in the back of his mind that someday it would all end. Someday, they’d go back and she would be…no. No, not the time to think about that. “Yeah, she’d kick your ass. And believe it or not, it’s too nice an ass to mess with.” Bucky said it to see if Sam would react, then laughed. “What? It’s a pattern with my friends, okay? C’mon.” He finished his drink and set the glass down before standing to follow Sam out. |
