CAROL DANVERS & STEVEN DANVERS

CAROL DANVERS
STEVEN DANVERS

IT'S A BOY!

JUNE 18 | The Station | LOW
He hadn't expected to win. His mother tended to beat him unless he caught her off guard enough and he'd already set rules. But that was all in the, well, future, and this Carol Danvers didn't know their play style yet. That was fine. It was still fun, even if she smoked him in the end. As expected.

But when she stopped to gloat (or so he assumed, because he would have done the same), Steven barreled into his mother to tackle her to the ground in their version of an overjoyed hug. Steven laughed and didn't immediately let her up. "Congrats, Mom, it's a boy!"

Carol hadn't really been sure what to expect when she accepted his challenge, but she figured it was a good 'introduction', anyway. Meeting him outside the STation, she was honestly a bit taken back by how familiar he seemed. He did look a lot like her brother. But she could see a lot of herself in him, too. There would be time for those questions later, because soon after they met, there was a nod and they were off-

Of course, she won. She had no doubt she would. In fact, she couldn't help herself but shrug and smirk. "I thought you were supposed to be younger than m-" There it was. A sudden hug which really caught her off guard, but also kind of made her feel strangely warm about it all.

And she stared at him when it was over and studied him- really studied him before shaking her head and chuckling. "Damn. Here I thought you'd be mad about losing- you sure you're my kid?" She was teasing, clearly.

"So....this is gonna sound weird, but can I at least ask when you were born? Or is that an off-the-table question?"

Steven grinned and let her up even though they both knew there was no let about it. He stayed on the ground, sitting cross-legged and letting his fingers dig into the sole of one of his shoes, picking at it in what seemed to be a familiar fashion if the state of said shoe was anything to go by. "Off the table question," he said, not at all sorry even though he gave a what can you do sort of shrug. "I can't risk not being born, right?"

"But," he added, "I don't mind talking about home life and all that. You know Steve isn't my father. I don't actually know who my father was or maybe is because he's not in our lives and, like, that isn't a problem." Both hands had come up in a defensive gesture. "It's not even a thing. You fill both sets of shoes, you know? And I have plenty of male role models around if I can't ask you something. Which is rare." There was a nervous energy to Steven, like he was struggling to stay still in that seated position. But he was managing it because at least they'd gotten the race out of their systems. "Besides birthdate, what else would you like to know?"

"Good point," she smiled and stayed sitting next to him, her hands on the ground behind her, knees pulled up in a relaxed sort of pose. It was a beautiful day, why not take advantage of it?

So, she never told him about his father. That almost surprised her, but if the guy turned out to be an ass or..maybe just not someone she knew well, she could see it. Besides, Maria had raised Monica into a fantastic kid, who was to say Carol couldn't do the same? Especially with the support around here. And, apparently, she did.

"I mean, I wouldn't say Strange was the best role model," she laughed, even if she didn't really believe it. But he was an easy go-to and a good man. "But...yeah, I'm glad you had that."

"Okay...huh....what is it you do? Or want to do after school- have you actually graduated where you come from?" See? Lots of questions. "The answer better not be accountant, for the record."

"Who, Uncle Doctor?" Steven asked, grinning wider if that was even possible. "He's at least good to go to for the clinical answers about things. The bullshit is minimal."

He tilted his head and tried to figure out how best to respond. "Well. I'm twenty. I barely graduated high school a couple years ago so try to remember that in the future. Worked my ass off but the ADHD ran track through my head all during school. We figured out what worked. But college just kind of..." Steven trailed off and grimaced. "It's kind of a waste of time and money at the moment. Right now I train at a gym and teach the twelve and under crowd how to be little urban ninja." He shrugged. "Parkour, acrobatics, that's all what worked. Still works. And even without the powers, I'm damn good at it." The smile returned. "Still finding myself but you give me the space to do that. As long as I'm not sitting around on my ass and annoying you. We've talked about the military but eh. I can put my powers to better use without that particular structure and miles of red tape."

"He's actually letting you call him that? Wow. I'm impressed," she chuckled. "I kid, though. Stephen's a good man. Most of the time."

She listened and nodded, kind of seeing some familiar patterns there. Not that she was bad at school- she was just bored a lot of the time. And rebellious. She had the advantage of needing to prove herself, especially to her father. And she wanted to fly, which meant keeping those grades up. She imagined it was probably a lot different for a kid with Captain Marvel as his mom and superpowers.

"Yeah...I was gonna say... The military was good for me. I liked the structure because it gave me something to focus on, but I...wasn't exactly a model cadet. You probably already know that." But he was making something of himself. She could see that already.

"I mean, there are worse things you could be doing back then. I kind of like the idea of you having your own tiny ninja army."

"He's letting me here so I'm running with it," Steven grinned.

He nodded along as his mother talked about the military. He'd had the conversations before but this was new to her and he wasn't going to just interrupt. Steven was the rare child who was rarely embarrassed by his parent(s) and Carol wasn't the lecturing type. "Tiny ninja army is definitely the goal," he laughed. "Especially when the pre-K class runs. The owner is great with kids but you need so many eyes and hands available so I'm glad to help out. It doesn't hurt that he pays fairly."

Steven went back to picking at the sole of his shoe. "You aren't too freaked out by this?" he ventured, head ducking just a little with his anxiety. "We don't know how long we'll be here. I doubt it would be a permanent thing but I guess that's always possible too."

She noticed the picking but didn't say anything, just chuckling at the comment about needing all hands on deck for the little ones. It was a good question. Why wasn't she more freaked out?

Taking a breath, she shrugged. "When you've seen the shit I have up there, I guess there are worse things than having your grown-up kid show up from the future. That and I was almost killed by Santa Claus only a few months ago, so this is nothing."

She nodded to him. "Temporary or not, we can make it count. If you do go back, odds are you aren't going to remember any of this anyway. Which...I guess will be weird for me in the future when I do have you, huh?"

Steven grinned though it was a little quieter somehow than the broad one he had been giving. "The Santa Claus story is one of your favorites to tell because it's so ridiculous. Every year around Christmas time, the mutters started."

"I'm not really worried about not remembering. You only get more cool with age, I think. And, like, you're not so great a liar that you could keep this sort of thing from me all these years so there's definitely some pocket-dimensioning going on. Maybe we all forget about it at some point, who knows," Steven said. "But is it weird being kind of... well I guess stuck isn't the right word. But you're here instead of tearing around the universe. Is that weird? I could probably keep up if we tried but we never risked going much further than the moon before."

She almost cringed at the mention that she told the story a lot, knowing how true that probably was and hating it all the same. "Oh no. I've become that person, huh?" The one that told the same story again and again and again. She made a mock face about it then shook it off with a chuckle.

The kid really admired her, didn't he? Maybe she didn't do a half-bad job. She smiled a little at the compliment and nudged him. "I mean, I can believe that. I made a pretty cool kid- if I'm cool, imagine how cool you'll be when you reach my age."

She really didn't want to forget him. Or this. Already, she was getting a little attached to the hellion. "I don't know if it's weird or not. I don't know if we can go farther than the moon here, either. But...I guess here is weird enough? There's a lot to be said settling down..." And maybe, she still held out hope that someday she and the kid would still get out of this place.

He laughed. "I have a feeling you became that person on purpose. Because we can laugh about it." He nudged her right back. "I'll reach your age some day. You're ancient," he teased.

Steven nodded along. He wasn't ready to settle down any time soon and he wanted to explore the galaxy - but knew the wisdom of sticking close. Part of not being willing to settle down was his inability to stay still for very long. Steven gave an enthusiastic clap of his hands and then shifted away from Carol. Only to do a kick up maneuver that had him on his feet a moment later. Trust this kid to not get up like a normal person. "I'm starving and you're buying because my wallet is innnAAAh, got you. I'm not saying."

Oh, this kid was brutal. She loved it, laughing and shaking her head. Definitely one of hers. Even if she had her doubts before, it was pretty certain now.

There it was. The holding back. She cocked her head to the side as she watched him, trying to read something from it then shaking her head and pushing herself up to her feet, dusting off her hands and nodding. "Yeah, I figured you wanted to mooch off me. What are you feeling like?"

"I always want either Chinese or tacos. I'm really sad that my favorite taco truck won't be around for another decade at least," Steven said and gave a dramatic sigh. He linked arms with his mother. "Lead the way, Mom. I'll let you pick."

"Jesus, you really are my kid," she laughed at the comment about Chinese and tacos, but she could go with that. "Chinese, then. We can order in. You can avoid telling me stories and watch old movies. And by old, I mean new releases."
