Who: Stephen Strange and Christine Palmer
What: 'Roommate' shenanigans!
When: Move in day!
Where: Their shiny new apartment
Warnings: ....Stephen

Fortunately, Stephen had only been displaced for a couple of weeks. The fortunate ones were the people who had had to deal with him. It had been a long and trying day, laying Tony Stark to rest, and all he'd wanted was to get a hot shower and maybe curl up with a book about ancient Greek magics. Instead, he'd found himself in Seattle. On the plus side, good coffee. On the minus side...ew.

He was grateful when they were finally set up with an actual settlement of sorts. Even if it was in San Francisco. There were worse places. He'd have to have a job, eventually, but well. It was something? And the apartments were nice enough, and they smelled new. Which once would have been amazing and now just made him miss the comforting old smell of the Sanctum.

Fine. It was fine. This was okay. At least they were helping the new arrivals out, and that had to count for something right?

He dropped the bag with his few belongings on the bed and walked out into the hall to begin exploring the apartment. "Anyone here?" he asked out loud. He was pretty sure they'd said something about a roommate situation, but honestly he was just grateful he hadn't been saddled with a kid.

For Christine, one moment she had been pulling gloves off and cleaning up after a successful surgery. The next? She was standing in front of a building being escorted, albeit nicely, by government officials.

She hadn't argued too much when they explained the predicament, that it was 2023. Just enough that at least one of them had to assure her everything was alright. "Dr. Palmer, I know this is difficult..." That was the point Christine had taken her items and gone to her assigned apartment. Knew it was difficult? It was life-changing! Being uprooted and dropped seven years into the future?

Christine was still wrapping her head around everything to the point she hadn't heard the apartment door open and close. Nestled into the room she had picked, on the brink of a possible nap, the voice broke that.

The voice that Christine had heard not too long before ending up in San Francisco. Her face scrunched up and Christine sat up. Hesitating briefly, she made her way to the doorway of the bedroom. Leaning out a bit, Christine took in a sharp breath. She wore the deer in headlights look far too well sometimes.

"Stephen..."

Stephen froze. The ordinarily collected and pulled together Master of the Mystic Arts, Keeper of the New York Sanctum, reluctant Avenger, and former physician suddenly looked like a fish gaping for breath above water. This wasn't happening. It wasn't even possible, was it?

"Christine?" Well of course it was Christine, Strange, you're not an idiot. Even if it was just someone with an uncanny resemblance, or a rival with the ability to copy her appearance... She'd known his name. It had to be her.

There were a million things he wanted to say. He wanted to know if she'd been one of the victims of Thanos' snap, he wanted to see how long she'd been there, he wanted to know if... Well, he honestly wanted to know if she'd missed him. Because Stephen Strange had an ego and he very well knew it.

But what he did say was, "You're my roommate?"

"That's your opening line?" she asked, amused more than anything. It wasn't every day that someone could render the good doctor practically speechless.

Questions would have been the better way to go for both of them, sure. How was he? Did his cloak still float? Was he still part of a cult that wasn't a cult?

From the looks of things, that was easily answered.

"I'm sure if you ask nicely, they could give you better accommodations." There was an obvious eye roll there as Christine made her way to the kitchen area. Pulling two bottles of water from the fridge, she placed one on the counter before opening hers. There were still a lot of things she hadn't gotten to say to him before they went their separate ways that night at the hospital. She wasn't sure she could say them now, though.

"I figured we'd have lunch at least once before you disappeared again," she said, lighthearted, but equally heavy.

"There's not exactly an instruction manual for being surprise roomed with an old friend when dropped in another dimension." One that shouldn't even exist. He'd seen thousands of futures. This hadn't been one of them.

He followed her out to the kitchen, quietly, almost meekly accepting the offered bottle. His head was going in twenty different directions and he honestly didn't know where to start to try and put it all together.

"Why would I want to live elsewhere?" He questioned hesitantly. Christ, he didn't even sound like himself. This was different than that day at the hospital. There was no urgency, his life wasn't in danger and, at the moment, no one else's was either. It was just him and her and apparently all the time in the world.

Something he wasn't really used to having anymore.

"I didn't think you'd want me to come back," he admitted. "It's...not an easy life, what we do. Dragging you into it felt wrong."

They had talked. He'd asked for forgiveness. She'd forgiven him. Christine had seen the change, drastic as it was. Seen Stephen Strange in a whole new light, fighting for something greater. She had regretted not being able to have a longer moment with him. To have that moment.

A grin tugged at the corner of her mouth and Christine chuckled. "I was pretty used to be dragged into things with you. To things mostly." It wasn't all bad, though. Stephen was brilliant. He knew his work. Knew his skill. Christine knew hers, or he wouldn't have worked with her as they did.

Wouldn't have kept finding his way into her life in some form even if it was through magic portals.

"I would have called but I didn't know where to find you." She paused, leaning against the counter after having taken a few steps in Stephen's direction. "Well, I didn't know where your not-cult hideout was."
