Who: Doreen Green and Dr. Bruce Banner
What: Meeting for the first time
Where: Their apartment
When: Mid-day Saturday

It had been a hard morning, and Doreen was hungry (she was always hungry). Dee hated flying. Though she was a physically small person, she had a large tail and a need for her own space. She also hated that she had to sneak Tippy Toe into the plane as the Airline wouldn’t accept that she had a service squirrel. Tippy even tried to explain it to them, but they wouldn’t listen.

After the long plane ride, there was a bus. Tippy was comforting, but there was a realization that she was basically alone. No parents. No Kamala. No Rayshaun or Daisy or Dante or America. It was uncomfortable. Doreen had been alone a lot as a kid, but she had gotten used to being part of a team, and she missed that.

She also wasn’t sure about how Dr. Bruce Banner would feel about her. She had only ever met Captains Marvel and America, and knew that she could sometimes… be a lot to handle. What would happen if she annoyed him? Would he Hulk out if she got to be too much? She jammed her hands into her hoodie as she entered the apartment building. Tippy nestled against her hands, an overstuffed duffle bag slung over the girl's shoulders.

She stood outside the door for a few extra moments. People were moving all around them. How bad could it be? Probably a lot easier than living in the shelter. She used her key to unlock the door, knocking as she walked in.

“Uh… Dr. B? It’s me, Doreen. You here yet?” She called cautiously through the apartment.

Bruce had been there for about ten minutes when they mentioned they were giving him a teenaged girl to look after. Which sounded fine, really, except maybe he could pry himself out of Veronica before worrying about impending parenthood? He did get an explanation, at least, which he appreciated. But wrapping his head around the whole thing was taking a bit and he didn't have a bit. He had to get to the apartment, get unpacked (okay, so he actually had literally nothing at the moment, but maybe they'd at least left some basic essentials in the apartments?), and meet...well. Doreen Green?

They also hadn't bothered to tell him anything about her. Like how long she'd already been there or that she was from a parallel world to his or...well. That she was apparently part squirrel.

He had literally just gotten inside 'his' room (also going to take getting used to) when he heard a small, hesitant voice in the hall. "Hi, yeah, sorry, one sec." The bathrooms were stocked with very basic essentials and it looked like the kitchens had the necessities for basic meals. That was something at least. Their personal rooms were going to need some work. He popped back out into the main living area, offering a shy smile. "Hi, Doreen. You can call me Bruce, that's fine really."

Doreen tilted her head slightly confused, but she nodded her head at him. She took a few steps forward and stuck her hand out at him. “You can call me Dee.” She said with a small smile, “I’m a… big fan of your work.”

Then, there was a rustling and a chittering coming from the pocket of her hoodie, and Doreen frowned. “No. You can not just ask someone why they aren’t green, Tips.” More chittering, “Because it’s rude!”

“Sorry, it’s been a long flight for both of us.” Doreen’s face brightened, and she dropped her dufflebag, before digging out a beaten up box of over sugared, chocolate covered granola bars. “Want one?”

Bruce accepted the offered hand for a gentle shake. Which had nothing to do with her gender or age and everything to do with just who he was as a person. "Really? So you're from...my world, I guess?"

And then he heard it. It absolutely sounded like a small woodland creature. God, he'd adopted Snow White, hadn't he? But the green bit, that he could explain.

Well. Kind of. He couldn't even explain why he couldn't be green, but he could explain the here and now anyway. "Ah, yeah, no, that's only a part time gig for me. More often than not, what you see is what you get."

"I'm good, thanks. The kitchen's pretty well stocked if you need something a bit more filling?" He hadn't even considered the traveling some of them had done. He'd literally shown up that day, but he remembered the government official briefly mentioning some of them coming here even months earlier. "So who's your friend?"

"Something like that, I guess?" Dee rolled her shoulders slightly in a bit of a shrug. "The Avengers definitely exist. And I also read your paper about particle radiation could potentially reverse the effects of unknown, isolated genetic abnormalities." Because of course she had, she had spent half her life trying to figure out why she was the way she was.

"You're going to like... let me know if I'm making you green, right? Don't want you to you know... do the smash thing." She said, hoping to sound casual and not at all freaked out by the Green dude.

"Oh, look, this has granola in it!" She said, showing him the box again. "It's got like.. oats and stuff, super healthy."

Tippy Toe popped her head out, the little acorn necklace dangling around her neck matching a similar one that Dee wore on her left wrist. Tippy hopped up, climbing up her hoodie to sit on Dee's shoulder and stare curiously at the doctor. "This is Tippy Toe. She's my sidekick and best friend. Also my emotional support squirrel and life coach."

Bruce was trying not to look as overwhelmed as he felt, but he wasn't sure how well he was doing with that. It was sort of nice to actually be appreciated for his accomplishments as him, and not as his greener half. Most of the time he was pretty sure the world forgot he actually existed. "I should write an amended version of that one," he pondered out loud. He'd had a lot more time to study that particular phenomenon, but it had also been a few years.

Well. Years in real time. In Bruce's head time, it had been a few months at best.

Okay. So she did know the Hulk and seemed to know some of his triggers? That was...good. Maybe. "You'll know," he said quietly. "And most of the time, I've got some warning. But we're not exactly on speaking terms right now." And yeah, he knew how weird that sounded.

His eyebrows lifted as he watched what was apparently a very intelligent squirrel. She absolutely seemed to be listening, but then if she'd been chatting with Doreen earlier, that shouldn't have been surprising at all. "It's nice to meet you, Tippy Toe." What? It was only polite. "Does she need anything special we need to get? The place is pretty well stocked for humans but I don't know much about proper squirrel care."

“It’s been a while anyway.” Dee said when he mentioned revising his papers. The shelter didn’t really have anything good to read. And since they stopped trying to figure out why I am the way I am, then well, it just sort of became a back burner thing too while I designed hero watch.”

Dee nodded, “Don’t worry ‘bout me. I’m an Avenger too… it’s uh. Well, it’s a secret. Captain Marvel told us not to tell anyone. We’re like a secret team. We were in space once.”

Tippy hopped over to Bruce’s shoulder, working her way down his arm to shake his hand in greeting. She chittered a bit before hoping back over to Dee. Dee took a large whiff of air in. “You’re right. He does smell like Stark’s lab.”

“Tippy says it’s nice to meet you too.” Doreen nodded. “She mostly forages for her own food, I just usually leave a window open so she can come and go. She also likes to eat nuts, and cupcakes.”
