Maddie absolutely wanted her son to have a great time on their vacation. Mom's guilt was strong since she was forced to work when she really just wanted to be spending time with Jonathan. He’d been so good about playing by himself and trying to stay quiet so that she could attempt to work. She hated to admit that maybe the offer for Eliot to watch Jonathan would actually be a good idea. But she couldn’t just let him go off with a stranger and risk losing her mother of the year award. Even though she probably wasn’t even in the running anymore since all she’d done was work during their annual beach trip. So she turned off her phone and started gathering up her computer and bag. She grabbed her phone charger and headphones.

“Jon, do you have your stuff? We are going to go meet this guy, Eliot.” Was she really doing this? Eliot had been so loud at night and was the absolute reason she couldn’t work once her son was in bed. “Get your swimsuit, towel and whatever else you want outside. I have sun block and snacks for you. Let’s go quickly.” She urged him to move. But she was pretty sure he was excited to go surfing. Which scared her to death and really would rather he not want to surf.

Jonathan knew his Mom was busy writing and needed to get it finished, but he also worried about how much it was stressing her out. She needed a break and the annual beach trip was the best time for that. Except so far his Mom hadn't been taking much of a break at all. That's why when his Mom agreed to take him down to the beach, he was excited.

"I got all that!" Jon chimed in as he exited his room wearing his swimsuit already and a towel flung over his shoulder. There was a noticeable bounce in his step as he made his way to the door, keen to get outside in the sunshine. "Come on, Mom! Let's go! If we hurry, we can get a good spot before the waves get too big."

When they got to the beach Eliot was already waiting, a sea breeze tossing his long brown hair as he moved to meet them. "Hey, little man! Ma'am." The second word was respectful and the accent was far more southern than you'd expect to find so close to the ocean. You could take the boy out of Oklahoma...

Eliot's smile crinkled the corners of his eyes. "I figured maybe after we get to know each other, we could go over some water safety. Stuff you need to know before you ever set foot on a surf board. That sound alright?"

Maybe he was asking, but Eliot's tone didn't really make that question a question. It was going to happen before he was okay with Jon going anywhere hear a board.

Maddie could tell Jon was excited to go outside and she loved that about him. Always so enthusiastic to try something new and to meet new people. Why must adults be so much more reserved? Once they were outside. He sprinted off ahead of her, although he knew not to run off out of sight. She trailed behind him only a few feet behind him. Maddie dropped all of her stuff in a spot that was clear- she would set up in a moment.

She followed her son over to where he’d stopped in front of Eliot. “Jon, let me take your stuff, your towel and toys.” She told him before addressing the man who had been there along. “Hello there. I’m Maddie and this is my son Jonathan.” She said introducing themselves to the man that had been so loud at night, that she honestly didn’t know how Jon slept through the racket. She stepped in towards him, she wanted to make it perfectly clear that if there was anything strange going on she’d stop the lessons immediately. “You sure you’re okay with this? He’s really excited for this and i want to give him an opportunity to learn new things…” she hesitated. At the look of the man, he seemed friendly enough and there didn’t appear to be anything alarming about him.

“Jon, I want you to listen to him. I’ll be over there.” Watching your ass playing with my son. She added to herself. Maybe she should be the one teaching him how to surf instead of their neighbor.

"Hi!" Jon called out in greeting as he and his Mom approached Eliot. He handed his Mom his towel when she asked for it and let her do the introductions and all the boring adult conversations like 'are you sure?' and 'be safe'. Jon knew it was important and was listening, but he was also eyeing off the nearby surfboards wondering which on he would be allowed to use.

Realizing they were talking to him, Jonathan's attention snapped back to his Mom and then Eliot. "I promise to listen, Mom." He replied honestly despite the fact he had been distracted moments earlier. "Okay, doing the water safety stuff first makes sense." As keen as Jon was to get out there, he wasn't completely reckless.

"It's no trouble at all," Eliot promised with a smile. "I'd rather he learn how to do it right and safely if he's going to learn. Best way to do that is teach him myself."

After all, Eliot had developed a big soft spot for the very enthusiastic Jonathan over their stay at the beach. The kid was a ball of energy and Eliot remembered being a lot like that at his age. It had led him to some bad places before he'd retired to the beach to spend his days surfing, and it sort of felt like he ought to... give back. See if he could be the kind of good influence that he wished he'd had.

"Okay, Jon, the first thing to know is..." the way that Eliot rattled off all the water safety information was smooth, as if he'd been teaching surfing his whole life. It was just, once information got in Eliot's head it tended to stick there, was all. And he was a stickler for safety.

Water safety? She knew that Jon did pretty well in the water but maybe Eliot was covering his bases? She wasn’t sure but maybe it would be good for her son to review it. With both of them engaged gave Jon a quick kiss on the head wondering if he would get embarrassed or not. “Good job. If you get hungry I have snacks. Okay I’m going to set up some stuff so that I can get something done.” That’s when she walked off and got herself ready to work, she turned on some music and opened her lap top up and grabbed a Diet Coke and tried to start writing. She would look up every so often to make sure things were going okay. Which they were so at least she didn’t have to worry too much.

After about 20 minutes she found herself not really typing so she closed her lap top and put it in her bag. A little swim wouldn’t be so bad, breaks were healthy. “Hey guys, how’s the lesson going?”
