Christmas Eve had been wonderful. After years of being on his own, Bruce would never take his little found family for granted. This year, strange as it was, it only felt improved by being larger. Adding Dee, of course, and May and Peter, and little Morgan... It felt like all the years alone were healing. And if he tried, he could almost pretend there wasn't a possibility he would be sent back and lose everything he had here. A world where Tony and Nat were gone. A world where he was very much alone all over again.
Though Dee was a bit old to tuck in and read a story, he did always make sure to tell her goodnight and make sure she was comfortable before he went to bed. It was something his mother had always done for him...and his father never had. And it was a comfort he wanted his foster daughter to have. Once he was certain she was settled for the night, Bruce made his way into the kitchen to start putting away their cookie leftovers and clean up the last of the dishes from his own baking earlier in the day.
There was a peace to the routine, and he was about to turn on the radio station that played Christmas music when he felt the presence behind him. He didn't exactly have Peter's 'Peter Tingle', but years on the run had made him extra sensitive to sounds and scents. And he froze, slowly turning, wondering if he should maybe do his monthly check in to see if the Big Guy wanted to come back out yet.
But what he actually saw was somehow both terrifying and beautiful and he couldn't help gasping out loud. "How?" was all he whispered.
