APPEARANCE
Luke is tall, 6'3" and lanky. He is all leg. HIs eyes are a startling blue. He keeps his hair cut short, and occasionally lets it go in wild, untamed spikes. He rarely shaves, and keeps a slight beard. He dresses casual, comfortable. he isn't overly concerned with clothes or style. He is the sort that people say "he cleans up well" about, though it is rare to see him in something over than t-shirts or sweats.
PERSONALITY
Luke was an awkward child. He was a twin, born 90 seconds before his sister, but he always saw her as his caretaker. He wore coke bottle glasses, and though curious as most children are, he tended to stick close to things that were familiar and consistent. He had a big imagination, and preferred drawing over sports and the like.
After losing his mother to a tragic accident when he was just six years old, Luke was then raised by his mother's sister, his aunt Janet. Luke struggled, as any child would, with the loss of his mother and the upheavel in his life. As a child, he withdrew frther into himself, seeking comfort in his twin bond with Nellie.
Luke developed rituals as a child to help him cope with the overwhelming weirdness in his life. Even into adulthood, he would consistently count to seven to refocus and calm himself down. He chose the number seven because it represented his family, two parents and five children. Luke and Nellie were the youngest, and as a child Luke looked up to his older brother Steven most of all.
As a teen, Luke fell in with a rough crowd. He experimented with drugs, leading to an all-consuming addiction to heroin. In and out of treatment centers, he couldn't seem to pull himself together. He relied on the drugs to get him through the day, and especially the nights. Darkness called to him, and terrified him, and caused him to lie and steal and do what he had to do to get his next fix.
Luke has a big heart. He has a lot of love to give, but it's buried deep because his childhood was littered with drama and trauma that fell like confetti, random and without reason or pattern or predictability. Luke suffered greatly because no one believed him when he tried to talk about the things he saw, nurturing in him a fear of being ridiculed and over looked and ignored. He found his acceptance in drugs, and the feeling that came with getting high because when he was high, he didn't care about any of it.
Luke, when he sets his mind to it, has a strong will and resolve. When he committed to getting clean, he stuck with it and earned his 90 day chip. Even after breaking out, in an effort to try and help a fellow addict, he resisted the call of the drugs on the street. He reached out for help, and while he might not have gone about it the wrong way, he got the help he needed, and managed to stay clean even in the wake of his sister's death.
Drawn back to the horror house of his childhood, Luke proved just how strong his mental resolve could be. He nearly died, mentally attacked by the house and its memories and its ghosts, Luke was saved by his dead sister, by their twin bond, by the love of his remaining siblings gathered around him. Luke struggled to maintain his sobriety after the fact, but he managed it with help from his family.
VALAR
Luke was born, along with a twin sister, the last of five children. His parents restored old houses and the family moved around a lot according to where his parents were working. They were localised to the southern California area, and drifted in and out of the OC over the years Luke was growing up.
Luke and his twin sister Nellie, always seemed to have a special bond. As babies, they would fuss if they weren't close to each other. As children, they were inseparable. If they fought, they always made up right away. Neither could sleep if the other wasn't close. Neither could focus if the other wasn't nearby.
Luke was six, the family was staying in an old house the parents were restoring. Luke's mother died in a tragic accident in the house. Luke swears he saw it happen, but over the years he's been told he wasn't there so much that he doesn't know what to believe. He has nightmares, vivid and disturbing, and he goes through periods of debilitating insomnia.
After his mother's death, and his father's arrest for the murder, the children were taken into family services. The three youngest siblings, Luke and Nellie as well as their sister Theo, were placed together. The older two were placed elsewhere. By the time he was an adult, Luke wanted nothing to do with his dad because his dad hadn't been there when he was growing up.
He was arrested for stealing a car when he was sixteen, and he was in and out of jail for petty theft and other small, non violent crimes well into his 20s. He's fresh out of a two year stint in prison for possession of illegal drugs, and has returned to the OC to make a new start by moving in with his sister Theo. After all, he needs to be close to family to function properly.
