History One of many children born to a mother who was not previously pregnant, Diego was adopted by eccentric millionaire Reginald Hargreeves. Reginald trained the seven children he adopted to be crime fighting superheroes. He gave them each a number, rather than names. The children were named by the robot Reginald created to take care of them. Reginald had very little interest in raising children, he focused on their abilities and training them to be soldiers in his war on crime.
As a child, Diego tried to be the perfect soldier his father wanted. He also bonded with Grace, the robot housekeeper/mother type figure Reginald provided the children. Diego rarely spent time with his siblings, he tended to prefer to avoid them when they weren't training or on a mission.
Diego left home as soon as he was able, and effectively cut ties with his family. He attended the police academy, but failed out. He is too much of a lone wolf, and too much believes he is right and everyone else is wrong to make a career in law enforcement. He dated a fellow cadet, and his relationship with her was the closest relationship he ever had outside of Grace.
After failing the police academy, Diego took a job cleaning a boxing gym after hours, and spent his time either boxing, or acting as a lone vigilante going after local criminals. Reginald's death brought Diego and the other six siblings back home, and back together.
The introduction of another powered child born under the same circumstances as the Hargreeves children further upset the balance of Diego's life. He liked her, she used him, and takes every chance to throw jabs at him. Diego is often the butt of the joke. Lilah made him feel inferior, yet he cared deeply for her, putting him at war with himself. Later when she showed up with a child in tow, saying the boy was Diego's son, Diego failed horribly but tried desperately to be a decent parent to the kid. Finding out Stan was no his son was a hard blow.
Diego is no stranger to the whims of time and space. he has time traveled, and traveled outside of the known universe. He struggles to find his place when these things happen, because his world is so self centered. He has a hard time considering the wants and needs of others, but reuniting with his siblings and fighting to save the world side by side with them has helped him gain perspective. He has grown a good deal since he first returned to the Hargreeves mansion, but learning and growing is a daily process for him.
Personality Raised by an eccentric father who preferred to exploit his children for their ability over nurturing them, Diego has always sought love and affection, attention, and approval wherever he can find it. He is quite needy, and will latch on to anyone who shows him any attention. Even negative attention sooths his need, he will take whatever he can get.
Diego is headstrong, stubborn, and largely unwilling to compromise. When he thinks he is right, he will defend his point of view to the point of it being comical because he can not admit when he's wrong. In part this stems from the fact he stuttered as a child, and his insecurities run deep. He does not choose a hill to stand on, he tries to stand on them all, and is rigid in his belief that his way is the right way, and has a hard time even considering compromise.
Due to his over all attitude and his unwavering belief that he was better than his siblings, Diego never really bonded with them as children. He handled himself like a pro when on a mission because anything less was acceptable, but he tended to avoid his siblings at home, resented them for whatever attention their father gave them, and considered himself better than all of them. Once he was able, he left home and struck out on his own, essentially cutting ties with his siblings entirely (though he kept tabs on Klaus through listening to reports on a police scanner.)
Diego is impulsive and irrational. He avoids getting close to anyone, self sabotaging any relationships that manage to get close to him. He tries to act cool and tries to be cooler than he is, but those who know him know it's an act. He is extremely self conscious and deep down questions his worth and feels he isn't good enough, and never will be.
