Bonding with Rats
Date: 1 March 1999
Characters: Charlie Weasley
Location: Charlie's flat
Private/Public: Private
Rating: PG
Warnings: A swear or two or several? (It's Charlie)
Summary: The dog needs some ground rules.
There were very few things Charlie appreciated about his flat. It was dingy, dirty, surrounded by muggles(not that he minded muggles but it did make the whole magic thing more difficult), his landlord was a jerk, and it generally wasn't a very nice place to live. The only reason he had actually chosen to move it there was the exceptionally low rent and the fact that he could fix it up with a bit of effort. Despite all it's faults he had to give the place some credit. Richie Twittering and the gossip columnists weren't lurking around the corner for a new scoop, no one was pestering him to shave, there weren't any healers telling him he needed to stop yelling, his brother's little love interest wasn't around to break anymore of his furniture, and there definitely weren't any dragon reserve trainees refusing to apologize for something they did wrong. It was peaceful and, in an odd moment, Charlie had taken to laying on his sofa and relaxing in the silence.
Yelp.
Well, he knew it wasn't going to last forever. The Weasley pushed himself up onto his elbows to he could look down at the puppy whom, for his part was looking innocent while he wagged his tiny puppy tail. "I suppose you want some damn attention as well don't you?" he asked it playfully, a tone he had already gotten used to using with him when now one was around. He received a bark in return and Charlie scooped him up with him onto the couch, where he laid back down, the dog on his chest.
"I think we're gonna be stuck with each other for awhile, at least until you stop eating everything in sight so I can convince a good home to take you," Charlie said to the little thing as if it could understand him, it was watching him intently after all. "So until then we need a couple rules, okay? First, you have to be quiet, if I get kicked out that means you don't have a home either. Second, we go on walks for you to relieve yourself, the loo isn't the place for shit like that. Well, it's not for you, unless you learn to use toilet. Third...actually just listen to what I tell you to do, no one else really matters okay?"
The puppy licked his nose and let out a soft bark when prompted and it wasn't the first time Charlie found himself wondering if the dog was magical of sorts. He gave a shrug and when the dog kept licking his nose he pushed it a little farther down his chest. "I'll call you Luca for now, but don't tell anyone, we're still gonna try and find you a good home to live at."
That was the first night Charlie allowed Luca to sleep on the bed.
