Summary: Hermione returns to London after being away
Sometimes, after conflicts, people hang around to try and deal with things face-to-face. Not Hermione Granger. At least, not this time. After the war had ended, she had stuck around, trying to make things right. The pain of losing everyone and watching her friends eventually take off on their own quests for answers left her bereft and alone. Not used to having to deal with hardship to this extent, Hermione took off herself. She returned her parents to their homes and modified their memories. Soon after, she just left, not explaining why and only leaving a simple note. There were things to deal with, answers to find, grief to heal, scars to mend. Hermione just wandered, an aimless ghost, not really interacting with anyone, never staying in one place too long. After several months, she had finally come to the point where she knew she'd have to rejoin the land of the living.
It was time to return home.
With a pop, Hermione apparated into her abandoned London flat, sneezing at the dust in the air. She groaned, knowing she should have asked someone to house-sit while she was gone, but also knowing she hadn't known how long she would be gone. She threw open the windows, letting the afternoon sunlight stream through, the cool breezes flowing in and airing out the room. She pointed her wand and used a little charm to clear off the dust and clean the floors. She heard a disgruntled "Yeow" and realized she'd left Crookshanks in his bag. She went over and unzipped the pet carrier bag, and he zoomed out, his bottlebrush tail straight up in disgust, yeowling all the way. For the first time in a while, Hermione laughed.
She finished tidying up her flat, making it hospitable and livable again. So far, no one knew she was back, and, as yet, Hermione didn't really know how to reintroduce herself to the wizarding world. She sighed, already at odds with what to do with herself. After making sure Crookshanks had a proper bed, food and water, she grabbed a jacket and made her way downstairs. Outside, she took a deep breath and began walking down the street, soon blending in with the Muggles. She spotted her favorite bookstore and ducked in there, soon losing herself in the stacks. She'd deal with her issues later.
