Since the kids were with their father for the weekend, Devon decided to make the best of the grown-up-time. She'd literally begged her twin to come spend the day with her, but then eventually stopped pestering Daryn and went off on her own. She'd enjoyed coffee and actually getting to read the whole newspaper at her favorite little cafe, then treated herself to a mani-pedi, and headed off to do a little shopping. She'd spent entirely too much money on new art supplies, but also managed to pick up some back-to-school things for the kids, and a precious little dress for her niece. Carrying two over-filled bags of groceries back to her car, Devon's mind wandered, wondering how to convince Daryn to spend more time with her. Maybe they could do some baking, like they did when they were little. They could Skype their mother in Atlanta, and things would be just like they were before everything happened.
At first, Devon didn't even notice that something was off. But as she approached her car, the expected splash of red caught her eye. Slowing to a stop, she frowned, reading the crude graffiti scrawled across the side of her car: drop dead, mutant lover. Dropping one of her bags, Devon heard one of the glass jars inside shatter and saw a mix of broken eggs and oranges spill from the top and roll under the vehicle. She didn't bother to pick up the bag, but was careful to set the other one down to save the contents. She looked around to see if anyone nearby was the culprit, or at least a witness. "You've got to be fucking kidding me. Who did this?"
