The Fall City Daily November 1, 1997 By: Richard Griggs
A detail of the damage done to the March's house.
On the night of October 31st, 1997, local business owners Ed and Cora March were hosting their annual Halloween party on the far west side of town. As someone who’d been there earlier in the night, I can pledge that it was an ordinary party in which family and friends could enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed setting. However, it ended in great tragedy.
Alice was last seen alive around 11PM on October 31st at the home of Mark and Debra Little, where many of the local children had gathered for a slumber party while their parents attended the party at the March home. FCFD discovered a child’s bicycle at the scene of the fire. “We think she must have biked back to house from the Little party sometime in the night,” Blumstein continues. “Nobody saw her leave, but maybe she got lonely or homesick without a favorite toy or something--we may never know.” While the cause of the fire is as yet undetermined, FCFD ensures us a full investigation will be underway. They are encouraging anyone with any information about last night’s events to please contact their office or the office of the King County Sheriff’s Department. Alice March, was best known by her teacher, Ms. Tanaka, for being able to round up kids of all ages into the game of her choice during recess. Ms. Tanaka tells us that she was the only child she’d ever seen able to persuade even kids older than her into playing with her. Alice certainly was a bright young girl whose life was cut too short by this terrible disaster. A friend of Ed and Cora March assures us that they both they and the family cat, Annabelle, are safe, but that they request privacy while they process their grief and do not wish to make a statement. Fall City Fire Chief Turner declined to comment publicly at this time. |
