[THEME MUSIC rolls and fades into background]
mara epstein Local legend. Urban myth. Town lore. The stories we tell one another, generation after generation. The intangible thread that weaves a community together. The intimate knowledge that differentiates outsider from in. Join me, Mara Epstein,
[Record Scratch. Music cuts out.]
mara epstein as I explore the mystery unfolding in Fall City, Washington.
[a beat of silence]
mara epstein You might notice that Theo is no longer in the introduction or credited on the Pod. Though it pains us both to have to do this, Theo has parted ways with Americana Arcana until we've finished telling the story here in Fall City. We pride ourselves on our journalistic integrity and feared that Theo's continued involvement violated our ethical policies concerning potential conflicts of interest. A link to our full ethical guidelines will be in our shownotes from now on.
[Gilmore Girls theme song plays quietly in the background]
mara epstein Hello and welcome to Americana Arcana's first bonus ep, So Much Room For Activities. This bonus episode will be available in our feed on July 24, 2018 but our Patreon supporters are getting access a week early. To become a patron, visit our page at www.patreon.com/americanaarcana. Today, we explore the lighter side of Fall City. A tiny town that makes one wonder when Taylor Doosey is going to wander into the square to ruin everyone's good time.
[Music cuts out.]
Hugh Christian so, I was born and raised in the Seattle area, so I consider the Pacific Northwest to be home but I've been in Fall City since the film crew arrived back in the middle of April.
mara epstein That's Hugh Christian. You may not know his name, yet but soon, you'll likely recognize him as the guy playing David Lewis, the troubled teenaged arsonist who may or may not have been responsible for the March fire.
hugh christian I am a Seattleite, through and through, Mara, pretentious, complete coffee snob, what do you have an umbrella for? - that's just a light mist!
[he laughs]
hugh christian I am probably the last person you would expect to find in Fall City, but . . . I might have to eat my words that I'd never live in a small town, because I do feel myself acclimating to it. There's a beauty here, and a sense of community, people coming out to support each other, the Farmer's Market is full of incredible produce that makes easing seasonally and locally a dream, and it doesn't hurt that Raf's got some amazing espresso at Common Grounds.
mara epstein and this is the thing that gets you about Fall City. It's not some run down, just-short-of-Deliverance, creepy rural town full of people in overalls staring you down from their front porches. It's a community that can't seem to help but welcome even those it would like to repel. A collection of characters who chip away at your defenses with an endless barage of community activities you can't resist. Hell, some people even find them cheerleaders themselves.
hugh christian This month I'm helping Basma Saleh with the Dance-a-Thon, which benefits the Fall City Fire Department, and as I've always enjoyed dance I'm honestly looking forward to it - you should come join us!
mara epstein I'm white enough that I dance to lyrics and not rhythms. No one wants to see that.
[she laughs]
mara epsteinSo are you competing? Judging?
hugh christian God I love dancing, I wish I were competing, but I've been dancing since I first watched Gene Kelly dancing in the rain when I was five, so I told Basma that it was really unfair to throw me into the competition pool,
[he laughs]
hugh christian I'll be helping to judge, and also encouraging everyone to give it a try. It's a dance-a-thon so it's not so much the moves, so much as it is continuing to move, you know? Remind me later and I'll give you some tips.
[A phone rings and small talk between two women rolls in the background for a moment before rising to full volume]
jillian How many people are in this town?
mara epstein I don't know, like a few hundred?
jillianYou're exagerrating.
mara epstein Okay, okay, probably a few thousand?
jillian and they're doing ALL of these things in 8 weeks? Have you figured out where the money comes from?
mara epstein Meet Jillian. She and I have been working in public radio together since our college days. In Theo's absence, she's picking up the ball on helping me make heads or tails of anything. We were chatting after I sent her an email detailing the community event calendar for the summer. Note: she's doing this as a favor to me and not in her professional capacity. Her day job is helping produce segments on legal and political news, so she's obsessed with following the money.
mara epstein You do understand the scale we're talking about here, right? I mean, I know it sounds like a lot but it's not quarter million dollar events with 18 event planners or anything.
jillian The money is always the story.
mara epstein It's always the ex-boyfriend.
jillian I hate you.
mara epstein you love me for pointing out you're becoming as predictable as a procedural.
jillian So what exactly is Summerfest in rural Washington?
mara epstein Uhhh.. it's if the school carnival was taken over by that activity fair they had at the beginning of every academic year? There was yoga and junk food in the same place so I could get down with that.
jillian Activity fair?
mara epstein Ya know, join the chess club or whatever.
jillian for someone who professionally communicates verbally you're really terrible at it.
mara epstein that's why they pay me the medium bucks.
jillian You're always going to think that's a witty retort, aren't you?
mara epstein Yep.
