Sometimes, a man just needed to go for a drive to clear his head, especially when things going on at home were crowding out all other thoughts. Murder. The town swarming with people who wanted to find out who did it, and if it was related to Cora March's death almost twenty-one years ago. It was enough to make a man want to snap.
But he couldn't, not at home.
So he went for a drive. At first he let the road lead the way, but after he crossed the border into Oregon, he took over and headed into Portland. Busy city, easy to get lost in the crowds. Parking his car in a lot, he started walking around, careful of the hunting knife he'd paid cash for at a truck stop on the way here, tucked into his waistband under his shirt.
After walking around for a while, he found the perfect target: a homeless man sitting on the street, a sign propped up next to him asking for any help. He crouched down next to the man, offering a friendly smile and an offer to buy him some lunch. A quick trip through a fast food place (paying cash) and he and his new friend were heading off to find somewhere to sit and eat. He wanted to know how this nice old man ended up out on the streets. Yes, it was so sad how many people walk past him without so much as glancing in his direction.
He would let the homeless man have his lunch. A last meal, if you will. And then they would keep going for a walk, talking. Until they were well away from any other people.
As he crossed the border back into Washington and turned his car toward Fall City, he felt much calmer. More capable of dealing with everything going on back home. In fact, he even whistled cheerily along to the music on the radio.
