Who: Bailey and Belle
When: 29 November, on the train, morning (after boarding)
Where: Train
What: Conversation between Roommates
Rating/Warnings: None
Status: Closed/Complete
Bailey smiled and waved to Belle as she settled into her seat on the train. It would be good to see her roommate again after the weekend - especially after the most recent gossip, the two would have much to complain about. And then there was Tobias defense to inquire about. He seemed particularly defensive of her roommate, to the point that it was difficult to miss. He was quite the opposite of Gaston, Belle's other 'suitor', really, although he still played at being knight and defender. Bailey wondered what Belle thought of him.
Belle headed over to Bailey, offering the other girl a smile. It had been some time since they'd had conversation, though she knew that both of them had been busy working on school things and could get overly tied up with that sometimes. “How was your vacation?” Because that would be a start to conversation obviously.
"Insane, utterly. I am looking forward to getting back to school where things will calm down and I can recover from my vacation!" Bailey admitted. "This break is always the hardest trying to balance both sides of my family and trying to be in two places at once almost. If I had a time turner… even then I doubt it would make it much easier. But at least all of my Christmas shopping is done… Black Friday was again conquered."
Belle laughed and shook her head. “I am grateful that is not something I ever have to worry on.” Because most of her family was so far away that she only had to visit on larger holidays and even then it was only grandparents so she could schedule it easily enough with them rather than hopping back and forth.
"I think being in France wouldn't stop my family from fighting over time with me. Fortunately I've gotten pretty good at the game. Cooking with gran and my aunts and uncles in Boston, leave after dessert when everyone is falling asleep, arrive in time for dinner… Then distract Mom about me not being there earlier in the day by planning the ultimate Black Friday route and timeline…" It was her tradition - exhausting but at least familiar.
Belle laughed a little again, shaking her head at her friend. “I would never be able to manage that. It is enough that I have to cook for papa’s colleagues and entertain them.” Because Belle could be social sometimes but it made life a lot easier to not have to be really. “Christmas shopping is much easier though because at home it is just papa and I.”
"That would be far easier, although I don't do much of the cooking myself... The extended family is pretty big, and I'm the littlest until my cousins start their families. How is your Papa doing?" Bailey knew that Belle was very close to her father. "You had a nice visit with him then?" she inquired honestly.
“I suppose it is. I am glad for the resting time, all I have to do typically is be a good hostess.” She was the only child on both sides and so she was required to be responsible for things since her father was often easily distracted. “He is doing very well. He had been working on developing a few new ideas that should be selling for this holiday.”
"I'm lucky I'm too young to have to be hostess, I think… but your father is lucky you are good at it already." Bailey could probably do it if she had to, but still, "there are other things you'd rather be doing probably, but family…" Bailey smiled at the mention of new ideas, "Really? He is quite creative isn't he? I hope that the new things are successful."
“I have been doing it since I was young.” She had been the sole female in the house for her whole life and so it was nothing new to her to be hostess. “They tend to approve of the fact that I can have an intellectual conversation on a number of topics. I think many of their daughters are not as capable.”
"They are at fault likely for not having encouraged it." Bailey certainly had seen enough of that. "That is why society can be so cutting… intelligence with no other outlet." Bailey was smart enough to navigate it, but rarely bothered to engage.
Belle too rarely worried about putting forth much of her intelligence. It was just something that was a part of her like her hair and eyes. She was grateful though that her father had encouraged it. It made her life easier being in an environment where intelligence was prized. “It is a pity that they were not shown that they can be clever and feminine too.”
"They learned to be clever only in certain areas." Bailey had seen that too. "You and I though have more at least… and you have what appears to be an ardent defender." Bailey teased gently, before following up with, "It is nice to have someone else in our house besides the rebellious French calling out the scribller author on their bullshit."
A faint blush crossed Belle’s cheeks at the mention of her defender. She and Tobias had been getting along quite well honestly and she was glad for that. It was rare to find a person that complemented her personality since she could be somewhat abrasive. “He is a good man. Very interesting.”
"Intelligent and passionate… and another feminist," Bailey agreed. She smiled too at the blush. "Nice to have someone who appreciates intelligence," she offered. And he was good looking, but that wasn't anything more than a nice added benefit.
Belle’s blush deepened slightly and she nodded. “He and I shared a meal yesterday. It was...exquisite, truly.” Because he had taken her to an upscale restaurant and then for music afterward. She had not been on many dates, but she would have to say this had been the best.
"Shared a meal?" Bailey asked. "You mean went on a date?" Because really 'sharing a meal' usually meant date. "That clearly says something." It was nice to see her roommate blushing and describing things as 'exquisite'.
“A date, yes.” Belle looked down, though it was clear she had enjoyed herself from the huge smile on her face. “He is very unique. I enjoyed myself a good deal. Our conversations are always so rewarding.”
Bailey had seen only a handful of such conversations on the journals and that was enough to indicate a similar passion for topics of equality and politics. "It is good to have someone you enjoy yourself with." Bailey hadn't found it yet, but was happy to see her friends find it. "And enjoy conversing with."
Belle nodded, a teasing grin offered too. “He thinks you are beautiful as well.” Because he had mentioned that in conversation, when they had left the Halloween dance. She understood the statement. Bailey was a unique woman, very much like her, and she enjoyed the company of the other a great deal.
Bailey snorted. "He might be the only one to think so, but we've already established he has a thing for intelligent women." She had a nice rack for her size which was a kind of beauty. "I have nice breasts at least."
“I doubt he is the only one. People look at you as they do me, though I believe most find us hard to approach.” The compounded intelligence and beauty probably made it harder for anyone to try and get close. It was a fear thing she guessed, more than anything else. “You are lovely. He is not wrong in that.”
"You are my roommate but thank you. It's funny… it isn't that I am not attracted to people, but it just doesn't seem that important yet. Maybe you're right… that we aren't the most approachable… for us the way to reach us is through our minds."
“Exactly. You need to have someone reach you that way. Mind over appearance.” Belle nodded slightly. “It is good that you do not just notice appearance. Intelligence is much more important than visual appeal.”
Which wasn't to say a well-toned body couldn't be appreciated, but in a purely aesthetic sense. "As you apparently have. Hopefully it continues for you - that he challenges and appreciates both." She was happy that Belle may have found that combination.
Belle nodded. “I hope that it does. I cannot imagine I will tire easily of having intelligent conversation and amusing evenings out.” She hoped Bailey would find the same in her life. The other girl deserved that too.
It would happen… or it wouldn't, and her life would remain full-filled with her friends and her work and her family. For the moment Bailey was happy - and happy for her roommate too. "There is nothing worse than boredom."
