Adrian was doing a bit better, which was good, but Narissa was still averse to him doing too much. With that in mind, she had run to the kitchen for drinks, making him some good cocoa and bringing out some of the leftovers from the day before. Their parents were out starting their holiday shopping, so the house was empty except for them.
She settled the cocoa in front of him and then rested against his arm, her head settling on his shoulder. Being close was nice, and the holiday was making her feel a bit more sentimental even than usual.
"Thank you, Sissy," Adrian murmured. He let her fix the snack and drinks mostly because he was feeling too mellow to fight her about it. Mom and Dad hadn't been treating him like an invalid, which helped a little too. He didn't need to 'prove' himself as much. And Wallace had been off in Europe with her new boyfriend. The one she'd introduce him to at the Quidditch World Cup had managed to last until Halloween, but was gone before the actual holiday season. It all meant he was feeling a little more relaxed.
Narissa smiled slightly. She had been trying to follow his wishes, as much as she could. It wasn't easy to break her normal need to care for everyone around her but she was keeping it as small as she could for the sake of her brother. He wanted to be independent and she understood that. The holiday had been going pretty well by her judgement- nothing out of the ordinary. “You need anything else before we settle in?”
"You appear to be settled," he teased since she was already leaning into his shoulder. Enough that he didn't even want to lean forward to collect the mug to drink from it. It would stay warm until he was able to drink it at least. He was glad to have a quiet afternoon that was supposed to be quiet. They'd do some shopping tomorrow, when things calmed down a little more before going back to Hogwarts.
“Can't help it if your arm is comfortable.” She shrugged faintly and adjusted to grab a roll to nibble at. They were good, as most of the food was, and she was grateful that they hadn't had extra guests this year. The leftovers were a bonus (though the back of her mind pointed out that it would have been nice to have Violet and possibly Jackson there too.) “What shops do we want to go to tomorrow, do you think?”
"We need to find gifts for Mom and Dad… and I need to get for Professor Stark and Wallace something." He wasn't sure what yet, especially for Tony Stark, a man rich enough to have everything. Especially since he didn't didn't know the other man all that well yet, having only known him a few months at this point. "You are easy." Adrian teased.
Narissa nodded. “Joint gifts from us again, or did you want to do solo?” She was okay with either. Their parents were easy to shop for. She didn't generally buy anything for Wallace, she preferred to pretend the woman didn't exist mostly. As for Professor Stark, that was logical almost. “Give the Professor something reading based. Arithmancy books. You're in his office. You know what he has and doesn't.”
"We can get bigger items if we go in together." Adrian pointed out with regard to their parents. He knew his sister ignored Wallace… and Tony was a new wrinkle in the entire picture. "It seems like he has everything. And he doesn't need anything really." He would be the hardest to shop for. Well him and Jackson. Adrian had no idea what to do with that.
“We can, yes. That makes the most sense.” It was their normal route to take, buying one thing from them both for each of their parents. “He's your parent, at least biologically. It'll be like mom and dad. Even if they hate it they'll appreciate it because they care for us.” That was how real parents worked and Tony seemed to be trying if nothing else. That made him vaguely acceptable to Narissa.
"I still want to find something good." Adrian argued gently. "He bought art from the gallery… so maybe something in that vein would work." There was at least a little time to figure something out. And to figure out Jackson. "Are you shopping for Violet too?"
“Maybe ask your housemate? Didn't he buy some of her things?” Narissa paid attention to some things in the gallery. Not as much as he did but enough to know what was going on. “I am. Probably I'll get her whatever the newest game system is for home and some games for it.” Because money was not huge for the siblings and she at least didn't have many she had to buy for.
They were comfortable enough to be able to get what they wanted without worrying about price too much. "That sounds like a good idea. I was thinking of a suit for Jackson, something he could wear for his auditions, but not sure…" Since they had broken up and were trying to just be friends again, he wasn't sure if clothing would be too personal.
“Don't you always get him music?” Narissa looked at her brother curiously. “Might confuse him if you don't.” Because she knew they were broken up but they were still friends and they had sort of a tradition on that she knew. “I imagine he's got a suit. He's doing an audition this weekend, so he got to have something.” She was not sure what her brother should get the other boy but clothing didn't seem right.
"You're right, but then… it might be boring and predictable by this point… and he was so happy with his birthday…" Adrian didn't think he could beat that… so if he got music again… would it just be trying too much to recapture that?
“It's what you do and he always loves it.” Narissa looked over at Adrian, a flicker of sadness in her eyes. “He loves whatever you give him. You know that. It's just… You giving to him that matters.” Because she knew that well enough.
That had never been good enough for Adrian. He always wanted… more but still fell back to music for him. "Maybe not now," Adrian admitted. He didn't know how things would be now. It wasn't something Adrian understood well. He'd never been friends with one of his boyfriends before… and never wanted to be friends again afterwards.
“He's still Jackson.” Narissa looked at Adrian seriously and nudged his shoulder a tiny bit. “No matter what happens he's going to care for you. Look at his behaviour. Since you were together he's tried to be what he seems to think is a better man.” Even if it wasn't what Adrian wanted it was what she had seen happening. “Whatever you give him, he will appreciate it.”
"If he was still Jackson he would be Jackson." Trying to be what Adrian wanted wasn't Jackson, in Adrian's mind. "We were best friends because of who he was… is." Adrian loved him for that… "Not because of what he could be."
“Tell him.” Narissa spoke quietly but firmly. It was logic to her. “Talk to him. Tell him you want what he is. What he will become. Not what he conjures in his head as what you should want, or deserve.” Because she was relatively certain that was what Jackson had been going for, what he thought her brother deserved to have.
"He stopped listening to me." Adrian pointed out. It would have been easier if… but… It all made the present feel more important to him than usual. "Friends is better." Because then it wasn't so complicated. Then it all made sense between them. "If we can go back to that."
“Then give him music.” Because that was what he had always done. “To go back to what was you shouldn't change patterns. You give Jackson music. Every year. All the time. It's what he loves and you love that passion in him.” She was making a small jump but she was pretty sure she was right.
Adrian nodded, not flinching at her description of his feelings for Jackson. He'd said he loved his friend before. It wasn't strange to hear it echoed back. "Yes… it makes sense." Anything that would help them be normal again.
“I thought so.” She moved slightly and leaned to get her own cocoa, taking a sip of the still- hot beverage. Magic was good for that and while she was not supposed to use it at home, her parents didn't tend to mind if she did for small things.
