Who: Alice and Ari
Where: Train
When: Tuesday 1 September, just as the train departs.
Warning: None
Status: Closed, Complete
Summer was officially over. Ariana was going to miss the chances to sleep in and not have to worry about classes or homework piling up if she got sick. But at the same time, she always got excited at the beginning of the year. She’d get to see the familiar faces of her friends and usually see her crush. This summer had been filled with him more than ever though.
Giving one final hug to her father and brother, she promised to be careful and do all that she could to stay safe and healthy. She also swore to write immediately if she had another seizure, though she’d been luck with only having a few and quite some time between this summer. But they would never completely go away.
After bidding them farewell, Ari started onto the train and down the hall, checking compartments until she found a nice empty one and slipped inside. She was sure that someone would come along. Maybe Adrian, or some of the other friends she hadn’t had much of a chance to visit with this summer.
Alice waved at her roommate when she saw her face appear in the window of the train. It had been a long, sometimes difficult summer. Next summer would be so much better - she'd be legally old enough to do magic and that would make a world of difference.
Alice always felt so very far away from her friends over the summer. Trapped in the mundane world entirely lacking in magic and fun. There were only so many books to read or video games to play before it all got old and she just wanted to see a unicorn or cast some sort of spell just to remember that magic really did exist and her life wasn't just some big dream.
The train was a relief. Seeing Ari was a bigger relief. "It is so good to see you again. How was your summer? Please tell me it was magical."
Ari smiled as she saw Alice. She really liked the girl and the two teens mixed well. Both had that same sense of wonder about things that never seemed to fade away. Immediately, she walked over to sit beside her and hug the other girl with a smile.
“I was hoping I would find you sooner than later! My summer was actually really good. Magical but not in the usual way. I take it your’s was as muggle as always? I wish you could’ve come over. Da was working too much though and my brother refused to stay around to chaperone me having guests.” She made a face at that. Ari and her brother rarely got along, as much as she wanted to. “Did you do anything fun?”
The hug was returned happily. Alice felt instantly better surrounded by her friends and other witches and wizards. Just being on the train which was so unquestionably magical was a relief to her. "It was worse than last summer. Everyone decided I was old enough to have a job, so I went to work for my sister. It was duller than you can imagine, and I know you have a good imagination."
Alice shook her head as he friend settled into the seat beside her. "So I wouldn't have been able to come visit anyway. I had to be responsible and bored instead. I barely even had the chance to do my back-to-school shopping." That however was also due to the fact that her family never felt comfortable in Magic Marble. "I'm sorry your Da was busy. And your brother was a dope."
The idea of having to work all summer in a muggle place sounded boring and a bit terrible. Sure, she had tried to convince her father to let her get a job this summer to no success, but it would've been in the wizarding world at least.
"Really? You should tell me next time if you don't get the chance to come shopping and I'll buy your stuff for you. Better than having to buy by owl and wait for it to be delivered when school starts." When she apologized for Ari's father, the girl just waved it off. " It's not all that new. But it did give me time to go and visit a certain wand maker." It was well known that Ethan was the focus of Ariana's crush for years.
Alice would agree with Ari's thoughts about working - spending the summer as a muggle did nothing more than remind Alice how much she loved living in a magical world where reality was not bound by mundane rules.
Alice smiled at Ari's offer. "You are far too sweet, but if my parents knew that I could get my supplies without going to Magical Marble, then I'd never get a chance to get out! That would be dreadful. It is already dull being at home but at least I knew that I'd be able to enjoy a single day in the magical world before we got on the train."
Alice smiled and leaned in when Ari began to speak of the wand maker. "Did you? That sounds like a story, Ari," she prompted her friend.
Alice’s comment about not being able to see the wizarding world all summer did seem dreadful. How hard it must be to not have a chance to even see the beautiful world that they lived in and all that it brought. Ariana often took it for granted since she’d grown up within it and was constantly surrounded by it. “Well then I never said a word. Though next summer we will be free to finally do magic outside of school anyways so you’ll be able to come and go as you please finally.”
At Alice’s Prompting, Ari blushed a little. “Well, I literally bumped into Ethan at Quinque. I wasn't looking where I was going and neither was he. But he invited me for ice cream and I decided that being a bit more adventurous might actually work in my favor and I accepted. We spent the afternoon talking. He found out that I didn’t have a wand that was my own. His uncle gave me a new wand for free.” She said as she pulled out the beautifully carved wand. “One that Ethan himself made...”
"It will be nice… but it seems so very far away… and just a little unlikely too." Alice agreed with her friend about reaching legal age, but a slightly wistful smile. She knew better than to try to use magic around her family, even when she was able. And it seemed to her even if she was a legal witch, her family would treat her no differently since in their minds she was still just a child, and an immature one at that, unlike her sister. Still, there was hope. "Next year we'll be able to Apparate and meet up and it will be a much better summer…" It was something to look forward to.
"Although you did get up to some good adventures without me." Alice smiled at her friend as she talked about Ethan and her new wand. "That is quite a gift. And it is remarkable that one of our classmates created it even! I mean to be able to create wands at our age."
“It does seem so far away. We have a whole school year before we even have to worry about it.” Because they hadn’t even gotten to Hogwarts yet after all. She couldn’t wait though and wanted nothing more than to be able to do magic on her own. “Yes! We can finally go shopping in Quinque together and have some fun rather than your working and my attempts not to be a bother to my family.” Because she was a burden on them no matter how much she wished she was not.
“Isn't it?’ She pulled out the wand excitedly, feeling the warmth it gave off once more and smiled. “It’s so special. And I agree. He’s truly gifted to be able to make something like this while we’re students.” She gave an almost giddy smile. “Plus, I spoke to him. We’re friends now I think.” Which was a huge improvement over her quietly fawning over Ethan for years.
"For me it is. Your birthday is in a week, so you'll be able to Apparate over the winter holidays. I have to wait until almost the very end of the year," Alice lamented. She was happy for her friend, even if a sad at having to wait herself. Still, summer would be different this year - and that would be better. It was sad too that her friend felt herself a burden. "I wish my family wasn't so boring so you could come visit me over the breaks… But at least as you said, we are on the train back to Hogwarts where we can just be witches again." It really was something Alice loved.
Alice loved to listening to Ari telling her stories - especially the romantic stories. It seemed too that the crush on Ethan might actually be blossoming - or at least that the story was getting more interesting now that Ethan seemed to notice Ari too. "Friends is good. He is such a Ravenclaw sometimes - like he forgets to pay attention to other people… it must mean something that he not only noticed you but talked to you and got you your own wand!"
“Hopefully. that’s all hoping that I pass my apparation test.” And that the ability didn't cause her more harm than good with her medical condition. It was a worry that the healers had expressed and it was admittedly a bit depressing. Already she’d been banned from flying and quidditch since it was dangerous and potentially life threatening if she had a seizure while flying. She didn’t want to have to give up her apparation ability either. “Yes, all the magic we can do whenever we want once more.” She grinned and giggled lightly.
“Oh! Yes, he is. And beyond that, he can be a bit of a dreamer at times, but that’s part of what makes him so wonderfully appealing. “ At the suggestion that it must all mean something, Ari blushed and nodded. She hoped that it did. I was honestly surprised that he even knew my name. I didn't think he would ever notice me. But he did and we spent time together. Maybe this year will be filled with some excitement. What about you though Alice, any gentlemen catch your eye so far?”
"We'll both pass on the first time and then I'll be able to get to the Floo networks and get to Magic Marble to hang out and we'll get ices after work." Alice reassured her friend cheerfully. She knew a little about Ariana's limitations, although not the full extent necessarily. It was more fun to think about being able to be a proper witch and doing magic whenever she wanted.
"A bit of a dreamer… Ari… he makes me look good and even I know I deserve my reputation as a daydreamer." Maybe that was why they were friends - Ari liked dreamers and surrounded herself with them. That they were roommates didn't hurt, but Alice liked to think there was more to their friendship than convenience. She laughed as Ari turned the boy question on her. "You know me, daydreamer that I am… Nothing less than a storybook prince charming himself will do… I want someone handsome and clever and interesting and most of all magical… I can't imagine living in the mundane world the rest of my life."
“That sounds like the best idea ever.” She agreed with a laugh and a smile. It did sound perfect for when they were adults. She loved being around Alice and considered her one of her closest friends, second only Adrian and Jackson, but they were more like brothers than best friends. She just hoped that it would work out like that. At least she had the added benefit of being in the magical world rather than the muggle one unlike Alice.
“He.... alright he does, but I think that’s kind of a nice trait to have. Look at you. It makes you creative and interesting. It’s why you’re one of my closest friends.” She admittedly liked the daydreamers. It was something that she understood and was a bit of one herself. “And that just means we need to find you a charming prince since Ethan is the closest I can think of and he’s already mine.” She teased. “We’ll find you a charming wizard. There’s always my brother, but he’s a prat.”
"I don't know that it makes me all that creative or interesting as much as it means I have a harder time focusing when we study… but if you want to credit that for our friendship I am not about to argue." Alice said with a smile. It was in part her family's reaction to her imagination - and the fact that some of what she thought she was imagining turned out to be actual truth, Alice had learned once she began studying at Hogwarts.
"I'm sure I'll find someone eventually, but it's not like we need to be married the day we finish at Hogwarts. And as you said - you already have a good one.' Not that Ethan was exactly to her taste, really, but he was to Ari's taste and that was what mattered. When Ari suggested her brother though, she wrinkled her nose. "I've heard your stories about him… I doubt we'd suit."
“I think it makes you interesting, but I might just be biased. I think it’s more fun to be with you than it is to be with someone more practical. “ Plus, Ariana wasn't all that much better when it came to focusing herself. She tended to get distracted unless it involved healing usually. That was the one thing that she could keep on task with.
“That’s true, but it could be fun to plan a wedding right out.” She giggled and thought about her own wedding to Ethan one day, letting out a happy sigh. It could happen, she’d spoken to him now after all. “Probably not, but it’d be fun to have you as a sister. We could just gag him after the marriage.” she joked. “Maybe someone will catch your eye this year.” But it wasn't all about romance though. It was just as much about getting back to school and enjoying things. “Oh! Alice, did you hear what happened at the quidditch cup?” She asked, wondering if her friend had heard anything since she was stuck in the muggle world.
Alice wrinkled her nose in turn. "Being your sister would not be worth it I don't think… as much as I adore you. I'll settle for being your maid of honor in your wedding and having you play that role in my wedding, if I ever find my prince." Alice promised - holding her pinky up for Ari to pinky-swear with her.
Then the conversation took a more serious turn. "I saw the paper." Alice nodded, her face getting serious. "Were you there? Was it as bad as they say?" For all she was a witch, Alice was also as muggleborn as they came. While it meant she missed this drama, it also meant she was the exact kind of individual that would be targeted in this kind of attack.
Ari giggled at Alice’s face she made and nodded. “Alright, I guess sisters and best friends in spirit will have to do for now.” She said as she reached out to wrap her pinky around Alice’s “And deal. Maid of honor at each other’s wedding.”
At Alice’s question, Ari shook her head. “We couldn't afford tickets, but now I’m glad I didn’t go. I heard from Adrian and a few others that it was far from pleasant. People died after all.” She shivered at the idea that people would attack like that. “Hopefully it’s a one time thing though. My dad said they were sure to find the attackers soon.”
Alice nodded. "I hope your dad's right." It was a comforting idea, that the attackers would be found and then everything would be safe again."
