In a way, it was good to know that Bucky couldn't remember their time together, at least the time they were held against their will. It had been cold and painful and terrifying, and if Steve had the choice, he might have erased it out of his own mind. In terms of missing what they had had together... well, Steve could miss that more than enough for the both of them.
"Hey, do you think the Buck I was friends with two years ago was the same kid I met when I was five?" he asked, leaning forward toward Bucky. It was so easy to be close to him, but so hard not to be close the way they had once been. Something told Steve that if he reached out to touch him, Bucky would slap his hand away, the way he had in the hall. The other boy could barely handle the news that they had been best friends. Steve was quite sure that the news they had been lovers wouldn't be easily received.
"Besides, you're not the only one who's different. I... we went through this together. I'm different now, too."
