He'd already been struggling to find his way back to the Slytherin common room when the announcement was made, stopping dead in his tracks. The announcement was vague, and no details of whatever threat they were currently under seemed to follow the consequences of noncompliance. Which meant the situation was bad.
Detention or loss of house points really didn't mean much to James, and his fingers gripped his wand. Instincts told him to face threats head on and fight, not to run and hide. But as soon as he began backtracking away from the common room, a turn of the corner brought him straight into the path of Steve and the dog clutched in his arms.
"The fuck you going?" he challenged, staring the Hufflepuff down, because he was definitely not headed in the direction of his own common room. Unless James was more turned around than he'd thought.
