Wan had found his way into an empty compartment at around the middle of the train. Most people seemed to be congregating at either end - the older students near the front and the younger near the back. First years were tiny and while Wan thought it would be nice to join in with getting to know them, he would stand out and probably make them uncomfortable. And they wouldn't even be in the same year as him as it was. So he taken himself to where it was less crowded, less people gathering and catching up, a few even sleeping, and put himself and Mula into an empty compartment with Mula. She was off leash now that the train had gotten going and had claimed one whole seat for herself.
Wan honestly expected the ride to continue like that the entire trip. Him sitting there in silence with Mula. A silence broken only by the occasional rowdy group walking past from one end of the train to the other. An opportunity to watch the land pass by the window or pull out a book and do some studying. But mostly, just him alone. He certainly hadn't expected to actually find Gareth despite the cake offer he'd given.
But the name being shouted down the hall from his compartment was unmistakable, even if the voice wasn't familiar. He got up and slid his door open to look at the back of the person who'd called for Gareth run up to a guy holding a box after apologizing to others who'd peeked out in curiosity.
Wan kept the door open, though, his eyes on the back of whichever friend of Gareth's it was, before lifting his hand in a shy wave.
