Just mistreating books in general - and unfortunately with the library a lot of people did just that because it wasn't their book they didn't feel the need to treat it as carefully. It was dumb to Bailey, since library books were shared, it made sense to treat them better so the next person could enjoy it as much, but people weren't always like that.
