DESTINATION #10
Ybor City was originally founded as an independent city by a cigar manufacturer intent on bringing his business there. It soon joined the wider city of Tampa, however, to which its later prosperity flowed. The population was initially made up, primarily, of Spanish and Cuban immigrants, many of whom were employed by the manufacturer. As the city grew, other groups of immigrants made their way to Ybor City to set up services and businesses that catered to the cigar industry and its workers. Italian and Jewish immigrants were common. As the city and its resources developed, it became less of a transitional town and more of a home, with societies, social clubs, newspapers, etc. catering to the different groups, and even bringing them together. This was, of course, attractive to new immigrants as well. Ybor City developed as lively, multicultural place. But this growth and prosperity had to come to an end. As with the rest of the country, Ybor City has felt the cloud of the depression. In fact, the cigar industry was hit particularly hard. Their higher price saw most smokers switch to cigarettes and demand for product plummet. Some manufacture continues, though, along with other farming (a number of people have diversified, using their land for stock and vegetable farming) and a number of the businesses and services remain, but it is less populated and a bit more subdued than it once was. But its legacy still remains, and to our carnies it will likely seem more lively than the other places they’re been through. This time the carnival will be setting up on vacant land within the city, so they’ll definitely feel a bit more part of things here - for better or worse. ;) The port is to the south and Tampa ‘proper’ to the southwest. Another thing to note is that organised crime is alive and kicking in Tampa as a whole at this point in history. There will definitely be some illegal gambling going on somewhere! ★ Arrival/Setup: Tuesday January 7th/Wednesday January 8th ★ Pack Up/Departure: Sunday January 19th/Monday January 20th ★ Weather: They’ll have some rain early in the first week (on the road and some when setting up) with temperatures in the low-mid 60s (~18°C). This will then drop sharply to the mid 40s (~8°C), but with the rain clearing temperatures will rise again steadily up to the high 50s (~15°C), through the 60s and eventually to the balmy mid-high 70s (~25°C) into the second week. Before much the same cycle begins again (a little more rain, cooler temperatures, followed by an increase again). ★ Full Moon: Wednesday January 8th ★ Prohibition Status: Repealed/Wet |
