DESTINATION #9
Tallahassee has a rich history, from the Spanish encampments and what seems to be evidence of the first instance of Christmas being celebrated in the United States, to being the centre of the slave trade (and cotton production) in Florida. It was the only confederate city west of the Mississippi not captured during the Civil War. Following the war, though, Tallahassee cemented itself as a university town. Much of the industry moved south. The Florida Institute and Tallahassee Female Academy (which later combined into Florida State University) as well as two seminaries were built during this time. The cotton and tobacco industries, having been hindered, gave way to citrus, lumber and cattle. At this point in history Tallahassee is still a small university town, with much of its industry elsewhere. Given the time of year it may even be quieter than normal, with students back home over Christmas. But hopefully they get a handful, and the locals, too. ★ Arrival/Setup: Monday December 23rd/Tuesday December 24th ★ Pack Up/Departure: Sunday January 5th/Monday January 6th ★ Dates of Interest:
