The Loup Garou (or Rougarou) have featured in the nightmares of children in Southern Louisiana for centuries. Misbehaving children have been threatened with the appearance of these creatures, whereas those seen to be neglecting their faith have been threatened with the possibility of becoming one. But children and lapsing Catholics aren’t the only ones to hear tales of these beasts. There are those who swear they have seen such beasts stalking the bayous or woods of the region. Whether they’re original shapeshifters, having travelled with the other immigrants to settle in the wilderness of Louisiana, or the product of some dark magics, the tales vary. But now their existence might just be confirmed... The carnival is, once again, going to attract some unwanted attention. A spate of beastly attacks will see folks on their guard. Run-ins with the creatures will be inevitable as their time in Rayne continues, and those that survive might see themselves changed. For a little while, at least. ★ Start Date: Wednesday November 27th ★ End Date: Sunday December 8th |
So they’re werewolves? For the most part, yes. What differentiates them from other werewolf legends is the fact that they aren’t under the sway of phases of the moon. They are fully aware in their ‘werewolf’ form and (after 101 days) can change at will. So they could even be a patron or two attending the carnival entirely unnoticed. What’s this about being changed if my character encounters one? If your character encounters one and survives (and hopefully they will ;) they will likely have done so by either harming the beast, thereby forcing it back to its human form, or killing it. Either way, shedding its blood will curse your character for (not actually) 101 days. During this period they will not have the control the ones attacking the carnival will have, and they will be forced to change at night. Tales suggest that if they tell anyone about this, they will be cursed forever (though are able to control themselves after the 101 days). If they do not, they will be human again. But the 101 days won’t apply here? Correct! Once the carnival is packing up and leaving for the next stop, those afflicted will find the curse mysteriously lifted. What kind of ‘werewolf’ will they be? The half-man, half-wolf kind. Will the transformation be painful? Yes, it will cause those affected a considerable amount of pain to transform each night. You said they were self-aware, right? Yes, they will be. Feel free to have your werewolfed character sulk. Or go rollocking around in the wilderness because they can. They might be a little more prone to aggression in their werewolf form, though, and will certainly be a lot stronger (and with heightened senses) than they were previously. If their blood is shed they will be forced back into their human form (until the next evening). Will they be able to communicate in this form? They will be able to communicate with other loup garous/werewolves but not with humans. (Cue the werewolf charades.) What about…? Please do ask any other questions you may have in the comments!
