DESTINATION #7
The most important thing to know about Rayne is that it’s the frog capital of the world. Originally called Poupeville, Rayne became Rayne when the railroad came through in the 19th century and the town moved closer to it. It was named for the engineer who laid down the tracks. In the late 19th century, a gourmet chef started selling frogs from Rayne in restaurants in New Orleans, which caught the attention of two brothers who soon set up a business in Rayne exporting these frogs to around the country. In addition to frogs, rice is common to the area. The town has a department store and grocery that also deals in agricultural equipment and cars (and accordions, apparently). Rayne is also the home of the only North-South facing cemetery in the US. The larger settlement of Lafayette lies to the east, and the bayous that provide this region with such rich folklore. This will be an oddly good stop for shopping, given the store, and an opportunity for characters to try frog - it will be on the menu. ★ Arrival/Setup: Tuesday November 26th/Wednesday November 27th ★ Pack Up/Departure: Sunday December 8th/Monday December 9th ★ Dates of Interest:
