DESTINATION #5
(Brownsville, TX) Los Indios is said to have received its name from a ranch built in the area by Spanish settlers in the late 18th century. Despite being a small town (its population is stable at ~150 at this point in time) it has quite a history. It was settled as part of a Spanish land grant, was disputed territory in the Mexican War and become a smuggling point through to Mexico during the Civil War. In the early part of the 20th century, Los Indios was established as a shipping point on the San Benito and Rio Grande Valley railroad. It soon became home to a post office and general store, with a church and school coming later. There are only four other businesses in Los Indios. To the west of town, along route 281, there are at least a dozen small, family cemeteries. To the east is the larger settlement of Brownsville, which should be in proximity of the carnival as well.
