He could understand her discomfort, really. Klaus never hesitated when it came to what he was or what he needed to do to survive. His conscience was far from sullied by the notion he drank blood in order to survive. He had been a vampire for centuries upon centuries - it was something he came to terms with quite quickly. He was also from a time period when there was less heavy-handed morality; barring the oppressive Church, of course. People mutilated one another for any number of things when he was human. People weren't a different sort of rigid than they were today and so he had learned to be what he was outside of the sphere of judgment Caroline grew up in. As a friend of Elena's and Stefan's, he had no doubt Caroline was high atop her high horse when it came to the notion of feeding on those who were alive.
He smirked at her when she boldly declared she would take what she could. Elena had been on the cusp of death and still tried to fight feeding off people. He doubted Caroline would so readily and confidently waltz into that. She had the luxury of forest creatures and blood bags for all this time. Klaus took a step closer at her question, "Have you ever really fed off a living, breathing person? And not just in some out-of-control rage," he pointed out, because he knew she had to have in order to be standing before him. "How many times have you literally held someone's life in your hands? Felt their pulse, heard their heartbeat," he took another step closer. "It's addictive," Klaus leaned in, tone lower. "Why do you think Stefan abstains? He's an addict. You know what its capable of doing to those who can't control it."
Blood lust was something not everyone could handle. It overpowered Stefan and Klaus could see the dangers of it corrupting Caroline as well. "I can help you control it. I can help you embrace it." He shrugged, "We can try hunting animals if you like," Klaus offered Caroline the most guilt-free option. "But apart from rats and the occasional stray, your options are limited. We won't be spending much time in forested, open areas."
