It wasn’t like Steve wasn’t having a good time. He enjoyed the music, he was glad that those he was travelling with were having fun. That was important. It was good to stop thinking about their strange circumstances for a little while and smile. Even during some of the bleakest moments of the war, Rogers had managed to sit with Bucky and laugh or lose a few rounds of cards to Dernier without being entirely overcome with thoughts of the battles that raged or the letters that would go home instead of sons and fathers. So tonight, he could smile and feel good about the place he’d claimed, leaned against the edge of a barrel with his arms crossed over his chest, watching everyone, but keeping a safe distance. When he was a lot ... smaller -- this was the place he usually occupied when Bucky dragged him out to dance halls or bars despite his usual protests. No one really missed him and it wasn’t like he’d ever been asked to dance anyway, and while tonight there’d been a few attempts by the ladies he travelled with to get him on his feet, he’d turned them down with a simple explanation that he was waiting for someone. It wasn’t a lie -- after all, if Bucky could show up looking like he did the very day Steve’d last seen him, certainly she could too, couldn’t she? Rogers didn’t even notice when Bucky crossed the grass and sat down on the barrel beside him until Barnes shoved a glass of something that smelled liked rubbing alcohol and fermented beets under his nose. Steve took the mason jar from his friend and held it up to get a glance at the liquid in the distance amber light of the hanging lanterns. “Am I supposed to drink this?” |
