[Carl is sifting through the contents of his truck wondering who must have 'borrowed' his wrench when he hears a groan come from around the other side. He moves around the truck slightly, before leaning to peer the rest of the way to see if he can identify the source of the noise. He can. It was made by what appears to be a semi-conscious young woman slumped against his truck. Carl carefully moves further around, frown ever deepening as he looks her over to see if she's injured in any visible way.] Hello, ma'am? Can you hear me? [Although her mind is momentarily clouded and her body momentarily weakened by the effects of Amon using his bloodbending to disrupt her chi pathways, effectively severing her ability to bend her unblocked elements, fear is quick to take hold and flood her anew. Korra is dimly aware of the words Can you hear me?, but even as her senses are refocusing, she's scrambling back away from the unfamiliar voice. Except she can't really go back because there's something behind her, so she corrects and moves to the side. She's managed to get herself into a crouch and she kicks out ineffectually. No matter how tough she is, this effects her greatly, and is evidenced by the expression of despair that flashes across her face. Unable to bend, Korra takes on a defensive stance before speaking.] Who are you? [Her tone is demanding, but there's a shakiness to both it and her stance that betrays her.] [He didn't intend to startle her and so Carl attempts to make himself seem non-threatening. He's quite a tall man, and the almost permanent grimace doesn't help, but he tries to soften his expression and places his arms up where she can see them. He has no intention of trying anything. He answers her question calmly and clearly.] My name is Carl Sinclair. I'm not here to hurt you. [His attempt to placate her is not lost on Korra, but she's not sure she can trust him on that one, especially not after what she's just been through, so she holds her stance, even if there is a part of her that wants to just give up on everything.] Then what are you here for? [She looks him up and down, finding no real clues. Only more questions. She asks the most pressing two first.] Where's Amon? Where's Mako? [Carl doesn't like this part. It isn't easy to explain and it isn't easy to take. And he's always in the middle of something when he has to do it. He offers her his most sympathetic expression in anticipation of breaking the news to her though.] They aren't here. No-one you know is here. You've been brought here, through time and space, by the management of this carnival. Wh- What do you mean brought here? I was just ..with them, why aren't they here? [Korra is clearly confused, on top of everything else she's battling right now. Though this information has given her a bit more fight, if only temporarily.] [Carl sighs as he's interrupted. It really is easier for both of them when they don't do that.] If you'll let me explain. [Which he was trying to do before.] Wherever you were you are not there now. This is a different time. This is a different place. This is a different world. Unless Management brings them here as well, the people you know are not here. Wh- That's ..ridiculous! How is that even possible?! [Korra's anger stems from her fear, which is creeping further and further in as her awareness of this ..place does. None of it is familiar and it can't be the Spirit World, which is the only other world she knows exists.] [He's back to a frown now and this time he continues from where he left off, ignoring her outburst and question.] Why you, in particular, have been brought here is something only Management knows, but I can help you get ..settled. Show you where you'll be sleeping and what you'll be doing- But I can't be.. wherever here is! Amon has Mako! I need to know if Tenzin and the kids are safe. I.. [Korra's demeanour is a little more desperate now. She just can't believe this.] How do I get home? [Although he's been interrupted again, Carl offers a sympathetic look to the girl as he answers that question.] You can't. Not unless Management decides to send you back. [He's sorry.] I understand that must hard to hear, but it really is easier if you just accept it now. I can show you around the carnival? Are you hungry? You really expect me to just accept this? Where are they? The management? I want to speak to them. [Her expression is stern and her posture now straight. If they think they can just kidnap her and tell her what to do, well, they were wrong. She'd ride this wave of fear, frustration and anger until it gave way to despair.] Now. [She crosses her arms for emphasis.] [Carl doesn't have time to argue, nor is he one to be intimidated. He fixes the girl with an almost bored expression.] I can take you to Management's trailer, but I'm afraid you won't be speak with them. Shouting, banging on the door or attempting to enter the trailer will all be met with silence. But all means, go ahead. Would you like me to show you? [Korra fixes Carl with a look of her own.] You know what? I'll find it myself. [And with that, she stalks off towards what she assumes are the trailers with the deep seated knowledge that everything that had happened today was about to catch up to her.] [Carl sighs. He'll have to find her again later to inform her on ..almost everything. In the meantime, he returns to scouring through the contents of his truck.] |
